Looking for Satin Mares
  • Looking for Satin Mares, homozygous sasa. Wanting to breed to him.

  • What marker are you looking for in the gene line? I will check all mine out for u. Am not breeding specifically at this point, just getting used to the game, so happy to sell horses.
  • Lunar is a 7th gen, I presume your looking for 7G mares?
  • sasa, preferably, but also Sasa, saSa
    Thanked by 1HolisticHorse
  • 7th generation.
  • Olio please breed my baby evenly. He is a Best of pasture Star papered evenly bred stallion. I know he's pretty and shiny, please don't devalue him by breeding him willy-nilly to any old quality or generation. I know I sold him and therefore don't really have a say anymore, but please use him to make valuable foals instead of more uneven, low quality auction filler. You should be looking for Blue or Gold papered gen 7 mares for him.
    Thanked by 1kintara
  • Oh, ok, sorry, I don't really understand why generations matter.
  • Generations matter because it has better quality and it will not be uneven breeding. Uneven breeding causes the quality of the lines to go down and some people have paid real money toward it, also uneven breeding makes the horse not worth much , most players won't buy uneven bred horses either
  • Also Olio if you'd like to get in on satin at a generation more manageable for a relatively new player, I would be happy to buy Lune back from you at your price and get you started with some mares and some breedings at gen 2.
  • I think I can deal with it, thanks though!
  • To elaborate on what Mystic said:

If you breed diligently and intelligently and cull hard and breed horses of like breeding ability, you can improve the breeding ability of their foals, and then their foals foals, etc.

It's the breeding of horses of like Ability that gets difficult. So in general most of us breed like generations to each other. If you breed widely different generations to each other, you are likely to get a very high proportion of spays and gelds in the foals. Of the few intact foals that you get, how do you know what breeding ability they have? You have to assume it's somewhere between their parents', but where? So if you've bred gen 2 or 3 mares to this stallion, should you breed their fillies to gen 4 stallions? Gen 5? And on top of that, because most of us ascribe to the even breeding theory to help us improve our herds, there is a good chance that your breeding stock won't appeal to many people for use as breeders or to buy and add to our herds.

Some people are absolute fanatics when it comes to even breeding, others like me are open to some slight uneven-ness if it is many generations back...but I would never touch a gen 2 x gen 7 foal.

One excellent reason to breed a high gen stallion to low gen mares is to get a bunch of high Performance Test score show ponies. Some older players will often put a few high gen high PT stallions up for new players to use for this with the restriction that all foals must be spayed or gelded. Earning show points and therefore gaining a large show bonus is the best way to make money in this game, but lower generation horses generally have a low PT and therefore level off quicker and at lower levels than upper gen horses, thus limiting their earning potential.
  • Oh wow. You have a nice stallion there. I would suggest breeding even to him, because even though he is a very good quality stallion (I have seen many of his offspring in the leader boards) the offspring tend to be close to the lower gen horse when breeding high gen to low gen in my experience. You got a fantastic deal though, and he should produce great babies with similar quality (same gen) mares. Not only would players like to see him continue to be bred even, but overall breeding high gen to low gen is a waste of the money in the high gen parent since so often the babies end up being second gen quality anyway. (In my opinion, I don't breed with large gen disparities, often, but that is what I saw on the few occasions when I tried it. Unfortunately the only satin carrier stallions I might be able to get satin foals from are 4g and 7g. Hope you find you mares!
  • Thanks, everybody!
  • So is the higher gen or the lower gen more desirable??
  • Neither....quality at every generation is desirable and much harder to get at higher gens. It's fun to take your Foundations and breed a "line" out to the high generations (a line may refer to a family of horses all relating back to the same stallion or it may refer to a specific color and pattern combo you breed from a group of foundation stallions out.). It's hard, but it's fun.

Breeding ability is much more difficult to assess in mares than in stallions, so as you breed up the generations, mares can start to lag behind. This is why it's harder to maintain quality as you breed up--you have to find the mares that measure up to your stallions.

I've been playing for about 15 months now and I'm solidly confident of my horses though about gen 3, starting to get optimistic about gen 4 and I know I have a decent stallion at gen 5 but my mares are pretty iffy at gen 4 and 5. I used to breed up to gen 8 but my upper gens were mostly from bought in stock, so when I realized I was in a bit over my head, I culled back to gen 4. Since then I'm seeing a significant increase in quality because I have a program that makes sense to me. I will slowly build back up generation by generation. Some of the older players here are up to gen 10 or even higher.
  • I'll have a few foals that are satin when it's breeding season if interested
  • Yes, I would be interested. No riding horses/riding ponies. Stallion/Mare are both fine. Passed gelding/Mare advice, PT no lower than 9. Preferably consistent. Close to 7th generation.
  • That's great :) , I don't do riding horses either :P , there will be a mixture of foals so I'll get back to you tomorrow :)
  • I have a static mare...but I don't want to sell her to you I'd actually like to buy a straw from you (from this boy)
    ----
    Barn ID 4953
  • How much would you pay, and how many would you like?
  • I'll just take 1 straw for now and how much is a straw worth to you? I usually pay 1k for good quality straws but since he's satin and 7th I can go up to 3k

  • 1k sounds good :) I'll send you the offer
  • Olio, I have bred this beautiful 7G filly http://hj2.huntandjump.com/horse.php?horseid=659648, I can put her up for you if your interested
  • How much are you asking?
