Breeding programs?
-
Hey guys!
Still a newbie here, but I am finally figuring out genetics and how things work in this game. Now I just do not know what to do next and where to start with starting my own breeding programs and such. I would some advice and any help I can get!
I just want to say a big thank you to you all as everyone here is so nice and so encouraging!Majestic Gaits Farm

I think the first step is to set a goal for yourself. Do you want to breed for particular colors, or just good show horses. Once you have a goal in mind then you want to start gathering breeding horses that will help meet those goals.
Also hang onto lots of show horses and show them twice every week. They are the best way to make money as their lifetime accumulated points adds to your daily income. I also show all of my breeding horses too.SALVISTAR PERFORMANCE HORSES

So for example my warmblood horses I want them to be silver rabicanos. So the majority of my warmblood stallions and mares have one of those genes. I also try to only keep horses of good breeding quality as well. So you can focus on multiple goal as at the sameness time as well.SALVISTAR PERFORMANCE HORSES

I dabbled in a bit of everything for a couple months before settling on my black chestnuts. I still have a couple nice KP and GP barns, but they are definitely hobby lines. My liver and black chestnuts are the main focus. I had to realize that I was not patient enough to go with KP on a large scale, and, honestly got a bit bored with GP after the first 2 generations (that has changed now!). I knew from experience that I wouldn't enjoy appys (too many genes to juggle!), and I much prefer to put my energy into the more realistic colors over the fantasy genes. So, for me it was trial and error. I really believe that new players should give themselves a couple months before thinking about settling on their goals. Just my opinion!Thanked by 1Dixieland789

Thanks guys! A few quick questions. What is KP and GP? I have seen it a few times now and have been curious.
Also, would it be smart in your opinion to do a trial breeding program with a simple set of foundations or no? Should I wait on breeding at all?Majestic Gaits Farm

Also when it comes to even breeding are eras important?Majestic Gaits Farm

Someone with more experience will answer your fittest question. As far as a trial breeding goes I would strongly vote yes. You can always auction them all once you've had a few runs with them. You could trial for quality, color, or size. I suggest getting some "top producer" horses which are usually Bay, black, and chestnut and then crossing said horses with some more flashy ones. Either RSs or some loud and colorful daily hh----

Oh and eras are to help newer player compete better with older players. A player with horses from Era 0 have more breeding behind them and will trump a new horse. Eras help divide and even the playing field.
I think a dial produced from uneven eras will always take the older Era. Say you breed an Era 4 to an Era 2 the result will be an Era 2 foal
Hope I explained that right, I'm not the expert here----

Your welcome :)
I would suggest you focus on well bred even horses and less on which Era they come from----

I would definitely do a trial breeding run. I say it takes awhile to figure out your long term goals.
GP is where the tail is white coming up from the bottom up.
KP is where there are clouds on the body of the horses. These are considered fantasy genes if they are heterzygous for the gene it wont show.
I am just now fixing to dab some in the KP ans Satin.Thanked by 1Dixieland789 -

In order to get GP and KP you will have to buy the gene and place it on an unbred 4 (or under) year old or to buy it from a player who breeds it. It is very expensive either way but both are amazing genes.
Like friend said, I hope to dabble in KP soon. I have some satins already though.
And remeber, there's no rush. Take time to see what you want to breed and how you want to go about it. I took a "trial run" for 8 solid months and am just now after a year breeding for quality...its fun but rough----

I have only been playing for a short time and still havent really figured out my goals so for now my main thing is breeding evenand strive for quality until i figure out my colors and genes.Thanked by 1Dixieland789

Both KP (Kit Promoter gene) and GP (Galustra Plume gene) are hidden genes, they cannot be tested for. ColorGood is right about how you acquire them, and while neither will show up with only one gene present (heterozygous), neither are considered fantasy genes (that's only for Nexus, Ice, and Axiom).Thanked by 1Dixieland789

I would definitely do some trial breedings, if for no other reason than learning how all the different options work. Breed, test, send the sub-par foals to auction, etc.Thanked by 1Dixieland789

Aw sorry Dixieland. I thought they were as well. Thanks Confluence for correcting me. I thought they were fantasy. Thanks for correcting me on that.

I'm going to go back to the GP/KP question. They are complicated, hidden genes that take a lot of patience and dedication to breed for.
In the Genetics Guide, Ammit describes GP under Hypothetical Genes. These are genes that currently have support from genetic science, but the exact genes have not been located or proven to exist. Gulastra Plume is based on a real chestnut Arabian stallion who sired many foals with tails that were white from the bottom up. He didn't show this trait himself, and other things can cause similar tail markings--Splash, for instance. In the game, a horse has to be homozygous for the GP game gene and bay-based for GP to show up. However, a heterozygous GP buckskin horse will have a grayish tail and a few light flecks in the mane. Ammit gave us this help when she introduced GP as a puzzle for us to solve when she introduced the gene as a challenge when she created the 2-millionth (I think that's correct) horse in HaJ 1.
Ammit does classify Kit Promoter as a Fantasy Gene because it was something she introduced "to test random marking generation in the game." It does mimic some of the occasional somatic mutations in real life that can give horses non-typical odd-colored areas on their bodies. It is not based on any real mutation of this type, however. In the game KP only manifests itself when it is homozygous and a horse has 2 mutated Kit copies--Kit?, not just Kit.
You can see exactly what Ammit says about these two genes for yourself by visiting the Genetics Guide.De gustibus non disputandum. "There's no arguing about tastes."

I think part of my confusion about KP is that it has, and remains, in it's own Breeders Club. It was not moved over to the Fantasy Genes club with Nexus, Ice, and Axiom. It may also be that my definition of 'fantasy' is a gene that could never occur in real life as we know it now. Kind of like the unicorn horn is a fantasy tack addition, but the saddles are not.Thanked by 1Dixieland789

So here is my plan. Tell me what you think about it and whether I should change anything about it.
So I'm going to do two "trial breeding programs." The first being my "Ditzy Draughts" and my second being "Warmblood Beauties."
Here are my foundation stock for DD:
Stallions
Mares
And here is my foundation stock for WB:
Stallions
Mares
So to the experienced players, does anything need to be changed or need to be added? I think I have some decent RS.
Thank you for all of your help!Majestic Gaits Farm

You have a solid foundation herd there. I didn't open everyone but I recognize several rank specials. And I see you have several Perfect Foundations. I would highly recommend you just play around with those kids for now and also spend some time looking at Show Off threads for foals and 2 year olds (which will start coming out in the new year and as breeding season starts back up), browsing the color based Breeders Clubs and playing with the horse search, especially the color and pattern tabs. Get a feel for what's out there. Browse the GMT lab to get an idea how much cool patterns cost. Find a couple of players who you think breed neat looking stock and try to get an idea of their overall program. Ask questions. And don't forget to spend some hbs to build up a show pony herd so that you can fund purchases when you decide what direction you want to breed in!Thanked by 1Dixieland789

I expect you are aware of this, but I'm going to say it, just in case: There may be some risk breeding your Sabino 1 stallion to your White 2 mare. Not as definitely as there used to be, since they both have relatively low white factor. Even with the stallion's White 20, he doesn't show a lot of white. Ammit's new Kit charts indicate that there is some risk. In the color demonstration it is Moderate risk. In the numerical chart, there appears to be some leeway. I have not personally been able to do any experimentation, but at least there's a chance of a viable foal now, when before there would have been absolutely none.
If they were mine, I would probably give them a chance, just to learn what might happen.De gustibus non disputandum. "There's no arguing about tastes."

I would get another mare or 2 for you DD line. This will help expand your results and give you more to play with. You can wait for a special hh to come out to create one or post an iso ad and have people make offers with foundation creates they already have----

Good thing about bringing in a new draft by another player is she may be older and have some points to contribute to your bonus----

I would say she should fit in quite well. I believe that both your stallions are perfect foundations, just as she is, and she gives you a good chance for buckskins if crossed with Dirty China, and almost anything with your Blackest Night stallion, depending on what her exact genetics are at Extension (red/black) and Agouti (where the bay gene is found).De gustibus non disputandum.
