what is splash 2?
-
I like splash horses but not sure if I have seen splash 2 on a horse.
-
-
To me it looks shinier than the splash 1. Is there something that I am missing? What is the difference?
-
In the game patterns are slightly different, and it interacts with other genes to produce a different pattern than splash 1 would. It's also lethal when homozygous and when combined with splash 3. In reality, it's located on a completely separate gene from splash 1. It's been identified as a separate mutation, and is seen in a specific bloodline (of quarter horses if I recall correctly).
-
Aw ok. I was looking to see if there was a homozygous splash 2. They are gorgeous.
-
You can have Splash 2 with regular splash, het or hom. They tend to be almost solid white.
-
Generally speaking, Splash 2 produces more white than Splash 1.
Here is a heterozygous Splash 2 horse with Extensive White Factor.

Here is a heterozygous Splash 1 horse with Extensive White Factor.

Of course, there will be other expressions of these genes with the same parameters I chose, but this will give you an idea of the effect of the three mutations. I tried to avoid horses with other patterns, and explicitly removed Frame from the searches, so there isn't a lot of complication with multiple white producing genes.De gustibus non disputandum. I was putting together an album to show the differences better (and I'm curious myself) when imgur gave out on me. I'll post it here when it's finished.

Sweet. I like all 3 splashes. I am thinking. How do you all figure out who to gmt?
Since I use to breed my paint gelding i loved breeding him over onto overo mares because he produced a 100 percent of the time the medicine hat paint.
I wished there was away to find one in the game. A medicine hat paint. -
Homozygous splash 1 and tobiano with extensive WF can produce a medicine hat:

Splash 3 produces them on occasion. If you look at my stallion Proginoskes' foals there's a filly that has a high white factor and splash 3, only her ears are colored. Usually medicine hats are a combination of patterns - the colloquially term is tovero. Since tobiano tends to make the horse's legs and top line white, frame tends to makes the horse's sides white, and splash and Sabido tend to make legs, head, and belly white, different pattern combinations can lead to a mostly white horse.
I added splash 3 to my snowflake guy when it was on sale, and since its lethal with splash 2 I didn't both in my snowflake line. I'm saving splash 2 for my next KP stallion, just waiting for Friday the 13th to roll around. I'm adding it to KP because frame and the lethal kits are safe with splash 2 & 3.
Just like in the game, when you're breeding in real life it's a good idea to have genetic testing done on your horses. Particularly paints, since frame can hide easily and the foal actually comes to term and has to be euthanized. It's just sad all around. Also important (with stock breeds at least) is the 5-panel (tests for PSSM, HERDA, GBED, HYPP, MH) that the AQHA is now requiring for stallions. There are some nasty genetic diseases lurking around from several very popular sires, and it's cheaper and easier than ever to prevent them!Thanked by 1Cheers -

Speaking of Frame, you need to be careful with all horses, not just spotted ones. It is perfectly possible to have a solid colored horse with minimal or no white factor that carried frame with nothing for it to work on. Or to have one with large or extensive WF and see stockings that are much, much shorter than you would expect for that much white factor--and the only way you would know it had frame (short of the gene tesst) would be to pay close attention to the White Factor and realize you should be seeing much more than you do.De gustibus non disputandum. My little foal is a tovero. Color only on the head and ears. White everywhere else.
I eventually want to buy another mare that is Impressive on top. Yes she would have to test NN for hypp. And Two Eyed Jack on bottom. My mare that had these bloodlines was my all time favorite mare.
I may have to start looking in the game for a few medicine hat paint mares. -
Wasnt Impressive the gray halter stallion that had severe bilateral Navicular Syndrome at like 4 years old? Get hoof radiographs with your prepurchase exam and a good vet to evaluate them.
-
Impressive was palomino. He had hyperperiodic paralysis. Meaning his body would paralyzed.
-
I know hypp--evil disease. I must have him mixed up with someone else.... I don't breed and don't currently have horses and even if I did, in Aus we don't have quite the same saturation of US sires, so I'm not as up on this as those of you who are active in that world! I'm so glad we don't have genetic diseases (or really any diseases besides lethal gene combinations) in the game!
-
I love the old bloodlines. I love researching horse lines. We traced Skys all the way back to the late 1800's.
I agree. -
@best, I had a couple of Medicine Hat mares with the hat and shields early in the game. They aged out a long time ago. But I am sure there is still a chance to get one in the game.
Outside the game, I had a friend that I helped with her APHA breeding business for many years. One of her three stallions was a palomino minimal white Overo, cropout from a Barlink stallion on top and Joe Reed on the bottom. On his bottom side he was Three Bars on the top, and Versary Bars on the bottom, but it was way back 6 generations. He produced a lot of Medicine Hat and a lot of Tovero foals when bred to Tobiano mares also. He had 82% color foals with extensive white patterns. He always had me wondering if the Versary Bars skipped that many generations before throwing a paint colt. He is one of the reasons I find this genetics game so fun. -
I love Versary Bars. He was beautiful.
Medicine hats and overos are my favorites. The louder they are the better.
I dream of one day owning a daughter of Painted Rugged Lark. Rugged Lark was my favorite QH growing up.
