Inconsistent
-
Newbie question here. What is the impact of Inconsistent - is it breeding, showing or both? Is it best to cull all inconsistents from the herd, or just spay/geld and keep as show horses?

Consistency applies to showing, not breeding. Inconsistency allows a horse's show score to swing above or below it's base score for the week. It can be as little as 1point either way, or much higher, maybe even up to 10 points either way. I'm not sure how high the upper limits of inconsistency go, since I don't have to track show scores any more. Horses that test Consistent may have a swing of up to +/- 2. Horses that test inconsistent have more variability. There is also a Very Inconsistent result possible, I believe, but I haven't seen one for a very long time.
Inconsistency is inheritable, but two consistent horses may occasionally produce an Inconsistent foal, and an inconsistent horse may produce consistent offspring.
Inconsistent horses can be very profitable, especially if they are lucky and have their scores swing up more often than down. I keep them for show horses if their PT score is over 10.
Whether you cull them out of your herd is up to you. Since it can be difficult to predict what their base score might be each week, it can be tricky to show them if you're just starting out and have limited funds. Once you get a substantial showing bonus built up, then it's less urgent to maximize profits and you can ignore that part of a horse's record.
When I was just starting to play, we didn't have a showing bonus, and all showing income came from profits. I didn't keep inconsistent horses much at all. Now I have thousands of horses and a large showing bonus, I just let autoshower take charge of my show schedule and let everything be shown.De gustibus non disputandum. "There's no arguing about tastes."

Thank-you. That helps.
