KP question
-
I want to gmt one of my foundation or possibly second generation stallions for KPKP. Which genes do I modify to achieve this?
-
First make sure that your horse has two Kit mutations-roan, tobi, spotted white, sabino--both alleles can be the same mutation or any combination, but two mutated Kit alleles have to be present. You can only GMT a horse that is under 5 years old, has no foals and has been color tested.
You can only put it on a 2nd gen horse if both parents have it and it didn't get it. Lined horses can only receive gene alleles that a parent has; you can't add something new that isn't there to have been handed down.
KP does not show up on the gene test, but it can be added twice in the Genetic modification lab. It costs 5 GMT per allele, fairly expensive, but far from the most expensive gene in the lab. If you scroll down almost to the bottom of the list, you will find KP, with two allele boxes, so add KP on both sides of the pedigree.
