Frame Gene?

so i just bought this boy for 1600 (pretty cheap right? lol jk) and i saw he was a chestnut frame.
what does the frame gene mean?

  • If you breed him to another Frame you have a 1 in 4 chance of getting a lethal white foal, that always dies. So 1 in 4 chance of a dead foal.
  • By itself, frame is often practically invisible. But it affects patterns, including all four whites, splash, and to a degree, sabino. The horses "edges" (usually the topline) are often not touched by the white, which is hte reason for the name, but it can give a smudgy look to the markings, too. Here are a couple of horses with frame and various other patterns.

This horse has white3 and frame, which gives her the extra splotchy look compared to white3 without the frame.

This one is a splash frame. In many ways splash and frame are the most dramatic; the white markings are distributed irregularly and seem to be random.

This girl has 2 copies of sabino2 with frame, which is pretty cool too.

This mare is white2 and frame.

Sabino1 and frame. Sabino is sometimes not much affected but you'll often get funny little smudgy markings around the legs.

And this is white4 with frame. The pattern doesn't look too much different than without, but it seems kind of cut away from the "edges" of the horse.

And sabino 3 is truly odd, with a lot of smudginess and blurring of the markings. I really like the effect though.

    The only one I don't think I have is white1, because I really don't like white1 :)

Like Paints said, you have tobe careful with Frame because if you breed to another Frame there is a 25% chance that the foal will die from Lethal White syndrome (that's what the lw stands for in the frame genetic marker). But it's a lot of fun to breed! Just look for a stud with one of the above white patterns and see what you get.
  • However, if you breed him to mares with any dominant white, or to a lesser extent splash or sabino (which only produce enough white for frame to really show off when they are homozygous), and the foal gets both patterns, the frame will change the expression of the other gene creating some pretty cool markings.

Here is one of my W2 frame horses showing the classic colored "frame" around the white on his sides:

what if i bred him to that mare?

  • Frame doesn't affect appaloosa at all. You stallion has extensive PATN so if the foal got the app, it would probably be at least a near leopard like the dam with not much chance of showing frame, even if it also got the sabino. Here is one of mine who is sabino frame appaloosa, with no visible signs of the frame:

Frame doesn't have much visible effect with tobiano either, although it can decrease the apparent WF if you compare the color testing results to the image.

It is sometimes possible to spot frame on rabicano with higher white factor, since the frame removes white from the legs, but doesn't change the rabicano on the barrel. Without frame, a horse with this much rabicano ticking would have stockings to the knee and hock:

  • You'll see the most dramatic results on a white (any white) or homozygous splash. That's assuming that the foal gets the frame (50/50 chance) and the white or splash.

Can you tell frame on a tobiano?
