Sorting fillies
-
How do you sort your fillies? I hate to keep them all and run test breeding on all of them, but maybe that's the best plan? I've run SMA/all the rest of the testing, short of culling based on PT, I'm not sure where else to go. PT based culling would do me out of my best mare so far, so I'm confused.
Help? Please and thank you!! -
PT doesn't have anything to do with breeding ability, only showing ability, so it's not a good basis to cull broodmares (although some people do it).
It's tough to cull yearling mares once you're through all the basic testing and still have too many. If you have the space, breed them for a year or two and cull the ones who don't produce superior foals. If you don't, pick your favorites. :) -
Got it. That was my default "dunno what else to do" plan, so more babies it is. Thank you!

Cull from color too. If you don't see what you are breeding for, snip.
-
I also do the same as both Abbey Road and KerredansCorral. If I am not partial to her color, then she gets snipped. If I am on the fence about any of them, I wait and breed them, and see how their foals do first. I have three really low PT mares that I don't show anymore, but I get a high percentage of Profit foals from them. So I keep them in the pasture until breeding time.

I cull pretty heavy on color. If they don't have silver or rabicano they go up for sale or get spayed. I don't have enough room to keep the pretties that don't fit what I want exactly.SALVISTAR PERFORMANCE HORSES
