What photo editor are you using? I use Photoshop and know that fairly well (though not as well as I did before I had to get a new Windows 10 computer and upgrade from Photoshop CS4 to the latest Creative Suite, which is a huge step). Anyway, I might be able to advise you if it's Photoshop.
Whatever program you use, you can look under the Save As feature of your editor to see if there's a "Save for Web" option, which will automatically lower the image size (not dimensions) to much fewer kilobytes.
You might want to start by going to where you can adjust the physical dimensions of your work and making its size something like 500 x 300 pixels.
You also have to store your image online at a site that allows direct linking to it, not on your computer. There are a number of such sites that provide free storage (with lots of advertising on each page, though). Photobucket is one, I think, but a search would help you find one. I'm not up on them because I had an account at a paid site before I started playing the game and just use that.De gustibus non disputandum. "There's no arguing about tastes."

I gave up on Photobucket and switched to Imgur. It has a lovely resize option in the editor.

Second what Confluence said. Imgur is by far the most user friendly photo sharing platform I've come across.
-
Imgur is so good!
