Pointed Creates and Points
  • Hi,
Despite having been a member before it would appear I have totally forgotten what to do with this game, so we're right back to the drawing board!
Someone mentioned to me that a new thing was pointed creates. Can someone explain to me in words of one syllable what this means, and also what the benefits of having a pointed horse actually are?
I'm trying to breed dark coloured appaloosas. More of a struggle when you forget what you're doing, lol
    Thank you in advance,
    Meesh
  • Ammit recently made it so that for stables that are just starting out, any created horse will already have some points to their record, even though they haven't been shown yet and are still showing in Level 1 classes. This applies to all stables that have fewer than 20,000 total points.

Here's a link to her announcement about it.

Here's a link to information about showing that discusses the point system that gives every stable a nightly cash bonus based on the points awarded to all its horses from their placings in shows.

  • Thank you :) SO all of this is about showing ability and not breeding. Have been wondering whether to spay my yellow mares and just keep the pretty ones, lol.
Am I right in thinking that it's really just generations and papering that affects breeding?
  • Yes! Technically, not even generations/pedigree affect it either. :)

So pointed creates are especially good for newbies because not only can you keep them for your own show herd, you can sell them for money to more established players! A lot of people keep any above 500 or so, auction the ones under 200 (which don't sell as well), and sell the 200-499 ish ones for 3k - 10k apiece. I've also seen 700-900 pointers sell for 40-50k - a great hb boost towards a new barn that can be invaluable in getting more established!

A good recommendation of show pony numbers is roughly 3 show for every 1 intact. It'll help you afford breeding. :)

As for breeding: every horse has a hidden number, expressed in percentage points, and that is their breeding ability.

A Perfect Foundation herd helper (C/yellow papered) is 100% breeding ability. A 1% boost will make that a B/red, so we know 101% is where B/red starts.

An Exceptionally Perfect (or exceptional producing) herd helper (B/red papered) is 105% breeding ability. A 5% boost (and no less) will bring that up to an A/blue, so we know 110% is where A/blue starts. 115% is still A/blue and a horse/clone cannot be further boosted past that point, so we don't know where star/gold papering starts (but I would guess 120% seems reasonable).

With that information, we know that the paperings go like so:

    Showable Only/Failed - X-X
    C/Yellow - X-100%
    B/Red - 101-109%
    A/Blue - 110% -X (maybe 119%)
    Star/Gold - X (maybe 120%) - X (we don't know how high it can go)

In breeding, the stud's percentage and the mare's percentage are used by the computer to determine a range of foal percentage, which is then randomly chosen (possibly with a slight bias towards the middle of the range).

When breeding a horse and aiming for high papering, there are two common options. One is to breed to the highest percentage you can find, in hopes that the foal will come out higher than the lower parent by a substantial amount. This is known as bootstrapping, and you will see things like a yellow mare bred to a star stud producing a blue filly, and that filly producing a gold mare. This is the fastest way to get your numbers up, but it can sometimes be trickier to ensure your numbers continue to go up without careful attention to the paperings of both parents.

The second method is to match the percentages of the parents as exactly as possible, as this makes it more likely the foal will be higher than both parents, and thus will pass BA/SBA ((strict) breeding advice). Breeding advice compares the foal to both parents, and, if it's lower than the allowable amount, will snip the foal. In this method, called even breeding, you are much more certain that the foal (since it passed BA) is improving upon the parent's ability. It is a lot slower, however, and you will see the papering going more along the lines of red out of c/yellow, red or blue out of that b/red, blue out of the next gen b/red, a couple generations of a/blue, and an average number if you keep it up is usually a star/gold by 5th or 6th gen. Some people require 4th gen star/gold but that's a bit harder to achieve (and usually done by starting with b/red foundations).

Holy text walls, batman! @-) Goodness, I hope I'm not scaring you here. If any of that confused you, I'm happy to elaborate on smaller sections at a time. :x
ISO any and all Silver Pocket Watches!

God grant me the hbs to buy the ponies I need,
The fortitude to resist the shiny ones I truly don't,
And the wisdom to know there will always be more next time.
