Belgian look horses
-
I want to try to breed the Belgian look draft horses. I have made and bought several horses that I think would make them. Chestnuts and bays mostly.
But I am not sure of the genes for this as i have been using other colored and special genes. Would someone be able to help me and give me some Ideas. Even have the draft tack pack for the harnessing. Thanks to my wonderful SS. -
If you want the white stocking look +/- white blaze on the face I'd look at adding some w20 into the mix. Oh, and possible flaxen (ff) for the pale mane/tail.ID: 40723Thanked by 1wendolyne

Not sure if you mean American Belgians, which pretty much only come in red with flaxen and pangare, or Belgian Belgians/Brabants which also come in bay and black, with and without roan and gray.
In either case, I'd recommend the heaviest bone and tallest horses. Adding in flaxen and pangare, and/or roan and grey. No white spotting (sabino, frame, tobiano, etc.)
The big floof tack package will give you bigger feathers.Thanked by 1wendolyne -
They, like Haflingers, have the extensive pangere - the lightening of red coloring on the muzzle and belly. So, you may want to include horses that are Pp or PP. There are frequently herd helpers for the gene, so it might be worth keeping an eye out. That, with the flaxen and w20 Ren mentioned should help!Thanked by 1wendolyne

I was thinking of that tack pack but then remembered that most belgians don't have a lot of feathers. But maybe later on will get.
I like both types of belgians. The only thing is that i would like the stockier ones. lol Less tall.
Will try both ideas
What about the brindle coloring?
Also what could I add to get some of them dappled? -
To get dapples sooty and silver are good bets, but I'm not too sure if belgians have silver.Producer of Volcanic Glass Drafts. Lapisobsidianus.
Prices are almost always negotiable.Thanked by 1wendolyne -
Belgians do not have silver. Only chestnut, bay and black (maybe grey?), and roan.
-
I'd stick for the sooty for dapples. While Halflingers are known to carry silver under all that chestnut, I'm pretty sure American Belgians do not, and we would see it (but we don't) in Belgian Belgians/Brabants.Thanked by 1wendolyne

The original Belgians do have a bit of feather, more so than the american ones, but yes as others have said lots of bays, and some blacks, with roan, and the flaxen chestnuts for the more american onesThanked by 1wendolyne

As FeldingFields has said, breed for the heaviest bone weight. You might not want to go for the tallest. Back in the days of my youth, I had a book on horse breeds, and it classed the Belgians as the heaviest of the draft breeds, but not the tallest. That distinction went to the Shires.
Breed standard says, "Height at the withers: there is no minimum or maximum height. Ideally: 1.70m for stallions and 1.66m for mares."
So, after some math, which isn't my strongest point, I'd say stallions ideally 16.83 hands, mares ideally 16.434 hands. However, some belgians are larger.De gustibus non disputandum. "There's no arguing about tastes."

I looked at the Belgian Draft Horse Corporation of America's website. According to that registry the bays, roans, etc have given way to the predominate sorrel and roan. I am unsure if that means that the other colors were bred out, or if colors other than sorrel are discouraged. The sorrel comes in every shade of red under the sun, but panagre, flaxen, and easy on the white seems to be the name of the game. The resgistry mentions roan, but I did not see a picture of a true dark headed roan. There were some that looked like rabicano, and a few that had the panagre creep halfway up their body.
So going with that, ee ff PP, with varying levels of sooty. If you want some spice add W20 and rabicano.
The corporation had a facebook page with some pretty pictures and turnouts.Thanked by 1wendolyne -
Here is a website I found doing a quick Google search. It specifies height and colors. It may be helpful for you. I love the look of the Belgians and would love to see what you come up with!

Would any of you have some drafts to sell or some examples of the colors I need to be looking for?

I found this made on the public sales:
3522479
And this one in the auction:
ExPerfectM5 R
And I have a few. I don't think the leg whit is naturally that high on mine, I think I was too lazy to match colors that day so I gave them socks :)) I can take their feathers off if you want to see how much white they have.

1K1 Chestnut 2718835
All of these mares are exceptionally perfect. -
I would love to buy the horses you have. Was late getting on here so didn't have time for much looking in the auction.
I have decided to buy the flock. There is a lot of horses with no white on the legs. This way I can add the white. Right now saving up for it. Should have it later in the week.lol
