Dilemma

Oh this guy..
He passed BA, papered B, and comp tested worse than his sire. Sigh. But just look at him!
What in the world do I do? Lol :-))
NLG Falcon Wraith 4 -
Oh wow! What a beauty! =P~
The average advice is that there will always be more but I would not be able to let that guy go.
Is there a possibility of a breeding boost in this guy's future? Is that within your budget?
I am not sure of the math. Could a 5% boost get him up past his sire or just AGA?ID# 47364
Breeding for all version of black drafts. (Including black liver)
Help me build my black brindle army!
Always looking to buy foundation brindle drafts in black, blue roan, grullo, classic champagne, etc.
I work a 7day on 7day off schedule and my activity here will reflect that.
I can be very scatterbrained and forgetful so if I don't get back to you in a decent amount of time just poke me. -
Thank you I’m smitten with him lol!
I’ve never used a boost before, hopefully someone with experience could give their opinion? Even if he was AGA his sire I would keep him for breeding. -
I don't have much boosting experience so will leave it to the experts.
I know how you feel though.
I have a second gen yellow papered chinchilla girl that I am in the same dilema with.
I am trying for my 2nd gen fillies to be red papered or higher. Usually I would just auction her off but she is just so gorgeous, I am wondering if a boost will help bump her up to a red.

Boosts are very expensive! I know it hurts to say try again next year, buuuut :P
Do think about how long it takes them to reach breeding age at least. Put them on the back burner for now, try for a superior replacement until they're of breeding age, then start to consider boosting.
Oh, and comp test him to an experf. That will at least tell you if he's high, mid, or low B, since all experfs are 105% (exactly mid B). If you have any A's that have tested AGA B's before, (and therefore are within one or two points of B papering) that can also give you an idea of where he sits in relation to his sire if you comp test the sire to that horse.ISO any and all Silver Pocket Watches!

Thank you! :)

Off with the jinglebells!
lol, well, you do what you like, but if he is worse than his sire, a boost (wich is expensive) would maybe make him AGA. That is still not progress, but if you don't mind, then go for it. But there is always next year, and other foals :) In a week, you wont even remember him :) -
@maribo you’re probably right lol there will be other pretties! I just don’t seem to have any luck with KP. I think I’ll keep him around the show Barn at least!
-
I know what you mean about getting lucky with KP. There will definitely be more pretty colts! I finally got an AGA colt from my bootstrap line out of the stallion I started bootstrapping with (he's a pretty high star and het KP). The first 2 colts from him to pass BA tested worse than and then the next season I got one that passed and tested AGA. I was super worried about not having at least a similar breeding ability to continue the line as the original guy is getting up there in age.
So in summary, hold on to him for now but keep breeding the sire and using your pasture bonus. You'll get there! -
Personally I would snip and keep him in the show barn. That's what I do with all my pretties I can't bear to let go!
-
I'm gonna interject here for a sec.
While I do agree that there are always more ponies that you could get with the same genome, and that breeding boosts are expensive, a 5% would most likely make him superior. He already passed BA, which means that he isn't too close behind his father- if he was, then breeding advice would have snipped him.
I wholeheartedly agree with lally. Give him a chance with your mares, you never know. He might do good -
BA will allow foals to pass that are worse than their parents. A breeding boost will not, however, make them superior. From my understanding, and what I have been told, there is a 2% leeway better and worse with an AGA comparison. So this worse than foal is not even within that 2% leeway of being worse than their sire. Hence, a 5% boost will not make them superior. The best he could ever be is AGA, and those are so easy to come by.
My advice, toss the dam into a pasture and let her build up a pasture bonus, and try again next season. While your little guy is stunning, he’s really not going to help your lines improve.Thanked by 1Lallyhop -
I'd keep him until I got a better quality one that's similar in appearance. Put his mum in pasture, and any similar mares if you have them, and give them a full bonus for next month. Or, if you have the funds, pull a ton of eggs / flush the mare and create a bunch of embryos.#28036

And hey, come take a look through my barns, too - I'm thinning out my KP pretty drastically so if you want to use some outside blood for a few seasons until you get your own superior colt, I'd be happy to oblige. Just PM me if you see anything that catches your eye!ISO any and all Silver Pocket Watches!

Thanks everyone! I probably will put that girl out to pasture for next season, and I have some other mares out there already I can try the stud with. In love with Kit M and Appy and the KP just is lovely. I don’t have too many KP mares though, they always come as colts lol
