Sabino 3?

So I was wandering through my horse's pedigrees and I found this guy. His kit genes are denoted as KitKit^w8, but in his GMT tattoos, it says he had "sb3" added. I'm assuming it's old notation, but I'm curious now. What gene does this denote?

That is strange indeed, now I’m curious!

Interesting! Maybe @Cheers will know since he was hers? Though since it doesn't say w8 was added I wonder if w8 used to be called sb3?ISO any and all Silver Pocket Watches!

I believe that is the case. It's been a while, but when Ammit seriously reworked the Kit mutations, that might have been one of the changes made.De gustibus non disputandum. "There's no arguing about tastes."

Here is Ammit's original announcement about the change.

Yep! White 8 used to be called sabino 3 and Kit M used to be called White 4 :)Thanked by 1Lallyhop

Ah, ok! So next question: what is the difference between a sabino pattern and a white spotting pattern? Why are they named differently?ID# 43830

Sabino is the old name, used before genetics were known, for the pattern. Its now known that the patterns we call sabino are in the same family as (relatively) recently discovered dominant white. Since sabino was "named" first, they kept their name, but all newly discovered alleles are named dominant white ("white spotting").#28036Thanked by 1HTRanch

For "same family" read "mutations of the Kit gene." :)
Sabino was the name given to Kit mutations that didn't ever result in dead foals because they caused minimal damage to the gene. Dominant White, on the other hand, tended to cause more damage, especially when the mutations were combined--so much damage that the embryonic foal could not develop properly and died in utero.De gustibus non disputandum.
