Straw Pricing
-
So with the holidays and all the GMT sales and RS, I managed to create several new fancy studs. I would like to offer straws on some of them next season, but I’m not quite sure how to price them. Is there a good rule of thumb to go by on how much they should be?
Also, I if I read correctly, some people offer straws as “guaranteed” which guarantees the straw will produce a foal that passes BA or be replaced at cost. Is it advisable to offer both types of straws? What should be the price difference and about how many straws will you usually go through to get an intact foal (assuming that you use a similarly papered mare)?
A few examples:
Freaky Friday RS with Hom mu, Hom SNF, Hom nd1, Sb1, Sb2
Wicked Donovan
Catch a Blue Moon RS with Hom Pearl, Hom KP, Hom SNF, Kit M, no Frame
RS Bleu Pearl Moon
Exceptional Producing True Breeding Blue Roan with Hom Silver, Hom KP, Het Splash M
XP Tsornin
Vault of Stars RS with Hom KP, Hom SNF, Het DP, Frame
RS FirstStar

If a horse has genes that you have paid for then I would normally charge 10k per straw...You can obviously lower or raise this price if you you need some extra funds or you are feeling generous and want people to enjoy your studs too. I find that if you charge around the 5k-10k mark then people are more likely to use the straws correctly, if that concerns you at all.
I have offered guaranteed straws once from my studs...You would charge a higher rate maybe around 30k - 50k but I find it can get very confusing trying to keep track of how many straws have been handed out and you can give so many straws away before they get an intact baby. So it's just if you can be bothered to keep track. :)♡ ID #23495 ♡

I tend to see guaranteed straws go for an extra 5 to 10k above the regular price - which would allow you to hand out 10-20 straws before you start to take a hit on the initial profits of a regular. Usually that's more than enough to get one intact foal. You usually don't guarantee anything other than passing BA/SBA in a guarantee - no genes, no gender, no size, nothing. (And then only if they're using a mare of matching quality). If you start to guarantee such things you're looking at more straws needed, so you'd want to increase the price.
I do think 10k is a nice even number, though anything between 5k-15k is completely reasonable. As the price goes up the buyers go down, though, so you want to find a balance there - 15k to make them mroe exclusive and fewer foals total, 5k to spread their genetics around a lot, 10k for somewhere in between, you know?
Do keep in mind, of course, the crazy amount of gene sales we've had this month and all the buyers. I, myself, will be buying less straws total, because I have a lot of my own new shiny boys to breed. I'm sure other people will feel the same. Not to say you won't have any buyers, just a reminder demand will be lessened, and so prices may be lessened - you might try offering 5k for January as an "introductory" special and 10k after that, when the craze has died down, etc.ISO any and all Silver Pocket Watches!
God grant me the hbs to buy the ponies I need,
The fortitude to resist the shiny ones I truly don't,
And the wisdom to know there will always be more next time. -
I have put 1000 on my Nx Ax Red boy, maybe should upper the price a bit? ;;)

@Stefliz, I would :)
Another thing to think about too is if a horse has closed genes, that lowers your buyers market greatly too as there are much fewer players that will own the gene. Another variable is if the stud you are offering is HOM or HET the desired gene, people will pay more if they are at least going to get a HET baby.
Again, it depends if you are trying to share your lines with other players or you are trying to make a bit of extra cash :)♡ ID #23495 ♡

I hold a straw auction on a new stud and then average the winning bids for future prices.#28036
