Help! I am a new member who used to be an old member (WC Inc, wayyyy back in like 2008), and I am just looking for the information about how to start out. I remember that you should buy cheap, well bred geldings or spayed mares to create a solid show string and etc. but it's been long enough that I need a refresher. Could someone point me in the right direction? Thanks a million!

The guides for newbies are still, as far as I know, on the old forum. A few things have changed, most notably the showing system. It is now much more profitable to enter your horses in as many shows as possible, as they accumulate points, and the points in your barn give you a weekly payout bonus. Of course, we have an accelerated breeding cycle here on HJ2, as well. Otherwise pretty much everything is the same.

Thanks that's very helpful! What is the history behind HJ2? Would you personally recommend starting a barn in HJ or HJ2 (I ask so I know which to get hooked on...would love to buy upgrades for everything down the road but for now I'd prefer to focus on one server).

HJ2 was started as a quicker moving game--each year lasts only one month, for instance. It was a chance for players to start out on a more level playing field, originally, so that newer players were not quite so overwhelmed by trying to compete with long established stables. However, Ammit has since introduced the Era system which allows horse lines during a given time period to compete against each other in both games. She also introduced a wide variety of leaderboards based on color/pattern groupings, that also gives opportunities for newer stables to compete more easily. (See the Breeders Clubs.)
Other differences than the shorter year:
There are no exceptional horses, as there are on HJ1.
You can genetically modify your horses, but there are no boost tokens to increase their breeding ability.
Fewer shares are available for the Herd Helpers, and the original number of horses you can make from your own is smaller.
Because the game year is only half as long, horses have only half as long to train and so level off at a lower point.
HJ2 is often used to beta-test game innovations before they are added to HJ1, which has more players and more horses.

Ah, that helps. Thank you. Was stallion papering rescaled along the way? Back when I played, I remember tons of *Star stallions and very few players (who also used the forum anyway) kept anything lower than that. Now, I am seeing many fewer *Star studs and a lot of A's, even B's on the market.

An average breeding foundation stallion is a C, unless you are on HJ1 and have an Exceptional, and they start off as a B. So most of the foundation studs you see will paper C. For most breeders, they look to get a B papered line stud for a second generation, and a A papered stud for a third generation , and hopefully a Star papered stud by fourth generation. Breeding for them is still lots of work though, culling through lots of foals. I've been over here on HJ2 since it began, and no matter how hard I've tried, I have yet to get a Star stud.

Okay I see. Is that specific to HJ2?
-
No, it is averagely for both HJ1 and HJ2, except that like I said, on HJ1 you can start with higher paper leveled Exceptional Horses, as foundations.
-
Gotcha. Thanks that is very helpful!

Ammit reconfigured all the papering for both mares and stallions, to make them more equivalent, three years ago. It was quite a change and took some getting used to, for those of us who were playing at the time, but it was a very, very good change, for the game and for the players.
Here's a link to a post by LookingGlass that helped make sense of it all.
