Where did I go wrong?
  • Last month I decided to breed a pasture of 10 mares to one of my stallions but afterwards noticed there were only 8 foals produced. I figured I added a couple mares that had already been bred or maybe a three year old, since usually that is the case when I come up short, but my stallion showed 10 breedings for the year. Since I love white patterns, I try to pay attention to the KIT Lethal White chart and make sure I refrain from crossing two horses carrying frame, but I figure I must have produced a pair of lethal white foals.

    My stallion has W20

The mares in question have W & W2, which I saw have a low risk when crossed with W20

Did I just get unlucky, or is there some other factor in play? I thought I read somewhere that Splash can increase the possibility of a lethal white, but I can't find the thread now to confirm.
  • When crossing horses that will/may result in a risky Kit pairing, adding Splash (any splash) and/or frame to the mix increases the lethal potential of the cross. Basically, the more white and less “color” a horse has on it, the more broken it’s genetic code and the more likely it is to be not compatible with life. Splash and frame add more white to the horse and can be enough to tip the balance over the line. Appy, however, doesn’t for some strange reason so you can have a true fewspot/leopard with a high WF Kit pairing with out further risk of Kit Lethality.

This link to the original post about Kit Lethality contains some discussion of splash/frame interaction with Kit Lethality and may be helpful.

  • As for luck, Id say you just got unlucky with Gorgeous but since Blue October is Hom for Splash she’s a slightly riskier Cross for you. You might consider crossing her with a stallion with no Kit genes.

It’s late here so someone should check my math but I think Gorgeous has a 12.5% of a foal with W20, W1 and Splash when crossed with this stallion, and it’s possible not all of those foals would be lethal (with a White Factor of None or Minimal they might make it, but you’d have to do a search to see if that combo is possible).

Blue October on the other hand will always throw splash so she’s got a 25% chance of throwing a foal with W20 and W2 when crossed with this boy. W2 is slightly less risky than W1 but since she will always through a foal with Splash, I’d expect her to have a slightly higher lethal rate than Gorgeous.

  • Thanks Cheers! That is the thread I was looking for but I was looking in the wrong places. I have similar stud without W20 that I can cross my CABM mares with as well, so I will stick with him.
  • W1 and W2 can always be risky I think when any other white patterns are added
