General Help Needed
  • I have been a member of this game for a long time, but have never really taken it seriously. Recently I decided that I would like to start really dedicating some time and energy to it and play it for REAL! The issue I am running into, is that unless you have hundreds of show horses, it seems impossible to make money... And I happen to have a weakness for shiny, expensive breeding stock.
I am looking for any/all tips people may have for me. Lay em on! At this point I have no show stock either, so I am in the market for some decently priced geldings/spayed mares too.

Thanks in advance! I look forward to getting to know some of my fellow HAJ peeps :)
  • Stalk the auctions, new accounts can now create horses with points. So many times there are horses with 50-400 points ranging from foals to 4 years old that just get tossed into auction. Watch for people to make forum posts about pointed creates for sale. They will jump your bonus quickly. I try to add anywhere from 5-20 show ponies each auction to my show barns.

  • I show all of my breeding stock. Many of my high point earners in my barns are breeding animals.

I also strictly limit my breeding animals for each paper level. Which cuts down on the costs you spend breeding each season if you have less mares to breed. Hard I know, but necessary to keep my barns under control. Once you get to be a bigger barn you'd never have the time to breed all of the mares that you could have anyways. So might as well be selective on what you keep.

Which the other thing I do is I cull pretty strictly to keep my breeding animals within my allowed number. I also have gotten far enough along in the game that I cull any showing stock with a PT below 11 or is inconsistent. Just because I wouldn't have enough room or time in the day to enter all my barns if I kept everything. I haven't bought a show horse in probably over a real life year because my breeding program produces plenty on its own.

Another good money maker is to place Mares for Brood. You can usually charge a higher breeding price for them than you would for a stallion of the same quality. I have a group of 60 mares that I've retired from my active breeding animals for one reason or another but I still put them up for brood every year for other players to enjoy and to rake in some decent extra cash.

  • Show ponies, show ponies, show ponies! It's never too late to build your herd! :)

As Fallen says, newbies making pointed creates and buying from auction are the best ways to go. I keep everything I breed and snip, too (with the exception of a few here and there) for my show barns, and then am buying ones with over 300 points to grow the herd while the babies get their feet under them (takes 5 to 6 years to do so, usually).

The best thing that's happened to my daily bonus has been saving up for a 1000 stall barn. My bonus grew exponentially once I got it and started filling it, and I'm currently sitting at just under 50k a night. You may have to save up for a couple 210s before you can make it to the 1k, but just dedicating all new barns to show ponies for a while will force you to trim down your breeding herds while your show bonus grows.
ISO any and all Silver Pocket Watches!

God grant me the hbs to buy the ponies I need,
The fortitude to resist the shiny ones I truly don't,
And the wisdom to know there will always be more next time.
