DP...again
  • I bought the DP gene for this boy, and want to know how to tell if he passed it on before I tattoo his offspring - How does one really know?

  • To me he looks like a black Liver. Meaning (if I’m right and he’s hom) he will automatically pass one gene of DP to all his offspring. So they’d all be at least het.

  • Yes, I would say he is a black liver. Meaning he is hom DP and all foals will receive a copy of DP.

  • He most certainly better be HOM DP, as I paid to GMT him for DP (LOL!!)

...How will I know though when his offspring are HOM DP?
  • I can only help with the red based foals for that. A black liver foal (hom DP) will look like the stud you have linked above. A hom DP chocolate Palomino will look similar to this.

  • Any more dilution genes (dun, champagne, pearl, cremello, nd1) can make it more difficult to determine either het or hom DP. I’m not practiced enough with it to give you good examples of that. And I am no good with bay/brown/silver bay etc.

  • It'll probably boil down to what the foals look like - if you're only breeding to other livers, it'll be pretty easy to tell if they're black liver or not! If you breed to a cherry drop or freaky friday, you'll know the foals are hom! Beyond that, it'll probably come down to giving you lots of practice in spotting dp, comparing one foal to another, rerolling portraits for a lighter or darker shade, using the horse search to compare further, het sooty to hom sooty, and lots of asking questions! I'd recommend joining the DP and liver chats if you haven't yet so you can ask about as many foals as you need. :)

(And as for me, I don't use a het/hom dp tattoo, just one that says dp. There are a lot of horses I have that I can't tell if they got het or hom, but I know they're at least het, so I slap them with the tattoo and call it good.)
ISO any and all Silver Pocket Watches!

God grant me the hbs to buy the ponies I need,
The fortitude to resist the shiny ones I truly don't,
And the wisdom to know there will always be more next time.

  • The stud is Hom DP and mare is only Het
