Gelding advice

I got this LOVELY smokey creme colt this season. He passed all free testing. I think he has a great PT score for only being second generation. But he papered C. I've done some reading on the forum and it sounds like he should paper B if I want the line to improve. I already have a few colts that fit my breeding plans that papered B. Should I geld or leave intact?

Well its up to you of course. But if it were me I'd definitely geld. Especially if you've got good colts who already have papered b. And you're correct, second gens should paper B if you want the line to improve. :)

I would keep him intact, but since the generation breeding it to have similar quality horses bred together to have fewer snipped foals, and testing has shown that this horse is foundation quality, but not too different from or better than your foundation studs I would use him on your foundation mares.
-
Still don't know how to advertise the foals with this sort of thing (yes, the father is 3/4 generation, but he tested aga my perfect foundation, and is bred to foundations, so the foals should be no different than 2g foals from a perfect foundation stallion, so... 2g?) I also have a lot of really nice horses that I use in higher "generation" groups, just thought I had to put it our there since reading this post I sound like a breeder that doesn't care about quality, but if there is a horse that really stands out, I like to see where that horse can be useful in improving my herd If a horse is a bad 2g, but will help quality and color on my foundations, why not use him to improve foundation?
-
Thank you everyone.
I do like his color so I'll use him as a foundation and see how he does. -
Wish you luck!
-
Well I just did a comparison test and he tested worse than his sire so I ended up gelding. I'll just try see if I can get a similar color next season.
-
Ok, there you go. comparison testing is key when doing this sort of stuff, just didn't know if you had it. He sure is pretty. Wish you luck next year!

I'm not sure he'd be improving your foundations, I mean you said he is no better than a foundation. We all play differently of course, but if a poorly bred stallion had a really rare colour that I wanted to preserve, I'd likely try and breed him to good mares of his generation in the hopes of getting a far superior colt with his rare genetics. It's worked for me before like that! -
Thanks Kintara! a As that horse is turning three next month I still have time to figure out whet I'm going to do with him. He'd be no different than breeding a perfect foundation to my mares, except he has a lot of color I want, and I haven't found a suitable foundry like that. But yeah, ever since I realised his mom was actually 3g instead of 2g I have been wondering" now what"
