Graying?
-
1987339 Summer Rain
This was my first horse on the game, and I saw her today and her colors have FADED. At first I thought it was due to graying, but she's homozygous recessive. I thought graying occurred when the allele was dominant. Why has she faded so much? -
That's varnish you're seeing! When a horse has appaloosa, they also have a chance to varnish.
In this game, it's a hidden gene that determines how much/how quick they varnish, but from what I've seen there seems to be roughly three levels, so it's probably a standard gene with het/hom with hom varnish being the strongest, het being the middle, and none being the weakest varnish (though I think they all varnish to some extent here).ISO any and all Silver Pocket Watches!
God grant me the hbs to buy the ponies I need,
The fortitude to resist the shiny ones I truly don't,
And the wisdom to know there will always be more next time. -
Snowflake, by the way, is a mutation of varnish, and basically works a lot like varnish but with bigger spots. You can see older snowflakes will white out entirely, while younger ones have much smaller spots.ISO any and all Silver Pocket Watches!

I am currently working on a project where I'm documenting color shifting in appaloosas in-game. If you click on the GIPHY links underneath the horses' pictures it will show a gif of the color changes so far!

I never can remember whether it's the red based horses or the black based horses that varnish out quicker, but one of them does. :DDe gustibus non disputandum. "There's no arguing about tastes."
