Responsible Frame breeding?
  • I tend to avoid frame because I breed in huge batches and I'm ... not always great on the attention spectrum. But it is so SO pretty. So I was wondering what kind of strategies to you all employ to have pretty frames without all the missing foals?

  • Only keep mares with frame. Use stallions that don't carry it. That will up your chances of alive, patterned foals!

  • I primarily only have frame mares. However, I have had successful frame x frame breedings. Its not a huge deal for me if a foal passes.

  • I also try to keep it out of my stallions which means there is never any chance of having a homozygous Frame Horse. You might still have other lethalities like Kit Lethality which is increased by Frame, but never a Hom Frame.

  • I intend to practice the frame only in mares method. However, as a new player with fewer stallions at hand, my best stallion first and second season had frame. So I made a pasture that was "frame safe" and had only non-frame mares. Anything with frame went into the primary pasture, and I just kept him out of it. He'll be replaced by one of his sons soon, and I won't have to worry about that anymore.

  • As a new player I would label my horses and have a lethal genes pasture which was all mares with lethal genes... then I would put a very safe stallion in with them..

Now as a more accomplished player I keep frame and most lethal genes out of my stallions... if a stallion has a lethal gene but I still want to use the stallion I do and may have a few dead foals.. but I breed so many foals now that I don't even notice which mares don't give a live foal from the cross.

With hand breeding I very rarely mix lethal genes though.
Breeding liver chestnut drafts that carry snowflake and kp.

    PM me for any enquiries.

  • Thanks so much everyone! I don't know why it didn't occur to me to just keep in my mares, but what a great idea! I'll definitely use that.

  • I always write FR in all my frame horses and I have a separate breeding pasture I move my mares into to breed but that takes time and just having frame mares is a better way to go. I also put W on a horse who has a lot of white or Spl on for splash 2 or 3 so i know to take care. :)
  • I have a tattoo that I put on all my Frame horses on both servers.

  • I breed in small batches, so if I have a stud with frame I match him with mares with no frame and vise versa. I have oopsed before, but not often. :)
