Feeling overwhelmed. Experiment time.
  • Since about June, when I lost my pasture foals for the first time, I have been feeling very overwhelmed with the game and like I just can't catch up. I know I'm not the only one who feels this way, there were several over on HJ1 who are suffering from the shorter breeding season over there. I have been putting loads of things off, testing ect. I have four year old mares who haven't had BI done and that makes breeding incredibly more difficult for me. I really don't like feeling like breeding is a chore, I miss the fun, de-stressing gameplay I used to have here.
So, I'm not doing any breeding next month. I am going to use my 120k showing bonus to run testing on all my horses to be sure they are all done (breeding inspection and genetic testing). Then I will go through and do my gen & gene naming - I have hundreds to name I'm sure. After that is finished I will start buying barns. Instead of having barns crammed full with no organization whatsoever, I want to have barns for show horses only, then separate barns for stallions & mares. I will sort further by generation and possibly then by special genes (chinchilla, mushroom, ice, ect). The final step will be culling. I want my showing bonus to support my breeding.
I hope I can do all that in a month. It's hard enough for me to accept losing a whole month's breeding from my GMTed and favorite horses, but I hope it will be worth it. I'll post updates here as I go on!

  • Sounds like a good plan. I found just stopping trying to breed everything and just breeding a few of my favourites was enough to make it more relaxing
  • Sometimes you have to take a step back and breathe :) I think you have a solid plan to do so.
I know what I do to combat it is I have my primary foundie pasture which since I'm currently pretty full up on G2s is bred solely at this point to be auction fodder to supplement my income while I have a couple smaller pastures that are set up to be pastures that I'm hoping for keepers for my herd and my uneven which is meant to give me show culls and the occasional keepers but while I've reached 1k+ horses I still think I have a relatively small and manageable barn to do so with, I can't imagine how difficult this will be when I get up there with some of the much older and larger barns.
God grant me the hbs to buy the ponies I need,
The fortitude to resist the shiny ones I truly don't,
And the wisdom to know there will always be more next time.

  • I know what you mean. I just cut alot ponys. I focus on what I really like last two months. I have made strict rule for euch barn. No buts for my butt.
I did leave on large barn for a fantasy mixer.
I have 30 stall barn for euch line, so I cant just keep prettys or run out of room. Plus breeding all the mares in time was hard. Not so much now when only keep the cream.
All foals go though SBA, they must meet genes for that line. They also must paper better then parent and also have better pt. If they fail right to auction or if high enough pt go to my show barns.
I also only keep one stallion for euch generation. If I see better stallion or breed a better on. That old guy is auction.
Feel free to check my barns out if it helps you.
  • I think that’s a solid plan. And if you find you get done with your sorting and organizing and there is still time left, you can always do small batches of breeding with those GMTd studs or your favorite guys. I’ve found that I needed to organize and make decisions on what I wanted to breed, and what was my favorite thing, and cut the rest to make it easier and less stressful. I’ve got half my breeding age mares for public brood each season just because they have a decent amount of points that I didn’t want to sell or they had a gene I might want to introduce later.

  • I think that is a great idea and is also, in part, what I plan to do next season too. With the holidays, work, secret santa, and everything else going on I wanted to not have to worry about breeding. So minimal breeding for me and lots of organizing instead! Good luck and I hope it goes well for you!

  • That is a fantastic plan. I did the real drastic version and culled probably 75% of my herds because it was coming to a point I was breeding to breed and ran out of space. So I went through picked my favorite stallions and mares as well as the highest pointed show ponies I had and a few of my two-year-olds for keeps and sent the rest to auction I then sold all my barns and turned most of it into IVS to buy new barns. I now have a 210 show barn and six barns between 30 and 60 stalls for my different lines. I don't use my pastures often I'm so much happier now. I can focus on lines as I want or I can have some fun and fill my show barn since my Primary barn is completely empty now. :) Good luck in your goals for this next month.

  • I bred all of my 2000 pasture mares for the first time this season and man was that overwhelming! Usually I only breed about half (Odd# gens and foundations one season, evens and bootstraps the next) but in October and now in December I’m travelling through a big part of the breeding season so will do minimal breeding. In January I might do the whole shebang again but I really try to pace myself and keep it fun. Don’t forget you can mass test in the barn—it makes testing way faster and it means you’re not tempted to let pretty babies slip through without testing just because they’re pretty!
  • Someone on the Bluegrass server just said that she hit 20,000 horses! :o I agree, with everyone else, you sound like you have a good plan. Be a heodinist for December. Enjoy the holiday season and plan for a pleasant and productive New Year!

  • It is OK to take a break and have a slow or no breeding month or months on this game. A number of months ago, I hit the same wall. Things were just getting overwhelming. The game started to feel like work. I started with Cheers's approach of splitting gens for breeding, and then just decided to breed just a few pastures for a couple of months. I spent most of my time culling and organizing. Most of what I culled went into a show barn where they just show. It helped my show bonus and destressed the game. December, with Christmas will be a limited month for me.

  • You are not alone!

Last November I did a massive cull and have done 2 more since then (although I didn’t breed as regularly through the summer on hj2 as I did on hj1)

My breeding horses are sorted into barns (I try to get the biggest I can buy) by generation. I use a prefix in the names to indicate generation of my intacts and use that to name each corresponding barn and pasture (on hj1 where I have extra pastures. I have those sub-sorted into kp or Axiom.) Every few months I empty everything out of my pastures and load up each starting with my special lines then add the filler horses.

I kicked my show horses out into a 1000 stall barn a few years ago and haven’t regretted it yet. They sit and show and usually earn enough to buy the next 1000 stall barn by the time I finish filling the last one. I will be buying another one soon as my show ponies have started to invade the higher generation barns.

I found reducing my lines helped heaps. I picked 2 genes on each game I wanted to focus on and added indicators to the names.

Hj1-KP and Nexus (NX), I’ve since added Axiom (AX) and recently a plaid (PL) stud but haven’t bred him yet.

Hj2-satin (Sa) and Ice (IC, IC8)

After each breeding season I select everyone in each barn (so no one slips by untested) and use the bulk testing at the bottom to snip everything I can. Then I use the search and snip inconsistent and non-grullos. Next I go through all of my studs foals and snip any that didn’t inherit the gene listed in the studs name.

Once I got everything trimmed down and reorganized I felt more ready to start adding new genes in and am now ready to start increasing my intact rate. This fall I went through and was even more brutal towards my Stallions to be EE DD so the foals are more guaranteed to come out Grullo and have seen a decrease in the non grullo horses I’ve snipped just because they are not grullo but would have passed all other requirements.

On HJ1 I placed a limit of the number of show horses I keep as I found that was my source of overwhelming. I still have too many to fit in the show barns but I pick away at listing them for sale to help other players and eventually they fit in time for the next batch to come out of the pastures.
  • Well, the first couple of steps took much less time than I expected. Why again have I been putting this off for so long? Lol. All of my barns have had breeding inspection and genetic testing done. Time for naming! Yippee!

  • Another update! I am feeling great about this. It's only the second of the month, pastures haven't even opened yet, and I already have everything named except for two year olds. I've been doing a bit of sorting in the barns as well, getting all the show horses consolidated in to my biggest barns. Maybe someday I will have the patience to save up for a 1000 stall barn. :))

  • Aaaand all the naming is DONE! Whew! I feel so relieved. That was the main part of what I needed done. The barn thing can be done more slowly. Freedom :))

  • I agree with Lallyhop I’m going to get another 1000 barn this month or next to hold my show babies to get them out of my breeders barns
  • Ok guys. I am going for the 1k barn!! It will take me over a month to get there but it will really free things up for me for a long time. It will be worth it. :)

  • Welll update time! I got a bit sell-back-happy and sold back nearly all my barns... not really realizing how many horses I had. I bought TWO 1000 stall barns. And I still have over 900 horses left in my primary barn! Welp. Guess I'm stuck for a while. That just ensures I won't be caving and doing any breeding :)) Now it's just slow going, putting all my showing bonus into iv's so I can buy another 1k barn.
In other news, I have gelded 67 stallions! I would like to do more, as I still have 170 intact. I'm feeling pretty good though!

  • Wow, well done!!
  • I’ve been feeling the same not enough time to get everyone bred. Maybe it’s time to downsize like you!
