-
Snowflake is a type of varnish. Looks like this http://hj2.huntandjump.com/horse.php?horseid=391391

Snowflake is a gene that only shows up on horses that are homozygous for it AND express leopard (lp). They have white flecks that gert progressively larger as they age. I got lucky really with this filly:
http://hj2.huntandjump.com/horse.php?horseid=529789
If you look back at her parents, both are appaloosas but neither express snowflake because they're both heterozygous. Her grandsire (on both sides....no comment :-\") is homozygous. He has more white than color, which is what she'll look like eventually.
Ammit mentioned on the Facebook group that snowflake can be found on random creates, in the same way DP shows up occasionally (I've gotten a few livers from sooty chestnut Herd Helpers). Thing is, snowflake can't be tested for, and has to be homozygous, AND on an appaloosa, so identifying random horses that carry it is nigh impossible. Best bet would probably be to cross a hz stallion on a bunch of appaloosa HH mares and hope to get lucky. -
You forgot the link to the horse @Denalidom. :)

So is my foal het. then? I think he is because his spots aren't white they are colored?
http://hj2.huntandjump.com/horse.php?horseid=529330
LlpLlp is what I am looking for for the snowflake appy correct? -
No. You can not see snowflake when het and there is nothing in the color testing about it. It's a hidden gene. You don't have snowflake in your herd because you have not paid to get it. :) You would know if you had it.

So you have to GMT to get one?
-
The gene is actually hidden, so only Ammit can see who carries it. Your boy doesn't express snowflake - if he did he would have white flecks. They're tiny on foals, and hard to see on certain colors. The solid colored spots are from normal appy. A Llp horse has spots on white, Llp Llp has a solid white area.
This mare is Llp L
http://hj2.huntandjump.com/horse.php?horseid=472931
This boy is Llp Llp, so he doesn't have spots
http://hj2.huntandjump.com/horse.php?horseid=452245
This mare is also Llp L, but her pattern is standard varnish. She doesn't have a "blanket" for spots to be on, but she retains the others appy characteristics (mottled skin, striped hooves) and also shows some degree of 'appy roaning.' Varnish roans also change season to season, but they look distinctly different from the snowflake pattern. Don't confuse the two!

For a horse to be snowflake they need to carry two copies of snowflake (a hidden gene , like DP or KP) AND carry leopard - either Llp L or Llp Llp. It's possible he's a silent carrier - that is has one copy of snowflake that doesn't show - but pretty unlikely. -
Well I got a bit long winded explaining that... :PThanked by 1ConfluenceFarms

@Ammit Sorry for being silly here, but I'm a bit confused. I thought you said on the FB page that snowflake was creatable?
-
It is, but not a single created one has been found on HJ2, there for she does not have it.
