Breeding for satin?
-
I've got a colt who is het for satin (saSa) what is the best way to breed him for more satin?
I've never been super crazy about satin, so I may sell him but I'd like to use him for his first season at the least.
I do have a filly (Niguel Office) who is satin and I will breed him to her for sure.----
Barn ID 4953 -
If both parents are heterozygous Satin, the odds are 1 chance in 4 of a non-Satin-carrying foal, 2 chances in 4 of a heterozygous Satin foal, and 1 chance in 4 of a homozygous Satin foal that will show the distinctive coloration, unless the foal has a large amount of white in its coat.
If one parent is homozygous for Satin and the other is heterozygous for Satin, there is a 50/50 chance that the foal will be heterozygous for Satin and the same for a foal that is homozygous for Satin.
If one parent is heterozygous for Satin and the other is homozygous for non-Satin, then there is a 50/50 chance the foal will be either homozygous non-Satin or heterozygous Satin.
If one parent is homozygous Satin and the other is homozygous non-Satin, all the offpspring will be heterozygous Satin.De gustibus non disputandum. "There's no arguing about tastes."

I'll have to see if I can find public broods that are homozygous (doubtful)----

Color, if you want to get into satin from "the ground up" let me know and I will see about getting you some gen 2 carrier mares.
