Stallion Papering
-
My understanding is that a stallion papered as *Star will be a better breeder than a stallion that is papered as A. I compared two of my stallions: SP Marbled Flames against his sire SP Joined Flames. The son is papered Star, while the sire is papered A. The son also has higher PT papering, although I understand that isn't connected to breeding ability. I was confident that the Comparison Test would show the son to be superior to the sire. The results? "SP Marbled Flames is about as good as SP Joined Flames."
Is there some nuance of Stallion Papering that I am not getting here? I was going to use the Star son as my main stud and retire his sire, but now I am not sure if it will make a difference. What am I not understanding here?
Thanks!

No, you're good! The key word here is ABOUT. Your star boy is about as good as his dad. While most of us refer to our stallions as comparing AGA or "as good as" each other or a benchmark or whatever, the reality is there is a range of abilities in stallions that test AGA. That range is much narrower than the range of abilities spanned by a paper grade, but it is still a range.
Your colt, Marbled Flames, is slightly better than his sire--good enough to paper a level above him! But it's only a very slight improvement on the line. That said, you now know Joined Flames is a very very very high papering A, one that is as good as a low *Star. This may be helpful to you as you compare other stallions. -
If he were in my stable, I would likely use him for breeding until I got a son from that sire that tested Superior to sire. Then I would compare the two sons to see how the first one compared to the second. He might test about as good as, in which case, you would know that the first and second sons were fairly close. If the second one tested superior to the first, then I would probably decide to neuter the first son and his offspring and rely on the second son for breeding, unless you got a third son superior to sire who also tested superior to the second son. OOf, that sounds complex.
I'll try it with a chart.
A papered sire of:
1. *Star papered son about as good as sire. Temporary next gen breeder.
2. *Star papered son superior to sire and about as good as #1. Probably replaces #1 as next gen breeder, but I might use both.
3. *Star papered son superior to #2. Replaces #2 as next gen breeder.De gustibus non disputandum. "There's no arguing about tastes."
