ISO Someone to help me with a class project based on HaJ!
  • I'm looking to see if someone would be willing to answer some questions about our community for a project! The project is for one of my college courses and will only be used for the class (in other words, it won't be published). The project is concerning Hunt and Jump as a discourse community - in other words, a community with its own norms/rules, sense of belonging, jargon, and expertise.
While this is for an "interview", the questions and answers will be text-based. I can post the questions on here for you to respond to or send them over PM. Also, I can cite your username or a pseudonym - whatever you prefer!
I need a minimum of one person, but I can have a few more if people are willing! Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
Breeding silver black, grullo, and blue roan drafts with appaloosa, tobiano, kit m, and other patterns. I also breed watercolor, nexus, and chinchilla.
  • I'd be glad to help you out. When is your project due? I'm going to be away from house and computer most of today, but will probably be online this evening.

  • If you need more people, I'd be happy to help.
  • I've only been playing for about 7 months, but id love to help out!
  • Thank you all for your responses! I decided I'm going to give the questions here. You can respond to this post or send me a PM if you prefer!

While not a hard deadline, I would prefer responses by 11:59pm ET on Sunday so I can work on the project on Monday. Please let me know if you have any questions about my questions or the project in general. Also, I can definitely share the paper when it's done in a month or so! Thank you all again!

How long have you been using HaJ Server 2?

How comfortable are you with HaJ’s terminology? How long did it take you to get to this level of comfort/familiarity?

Did you have previous familiarity with some of the terminology (e.g. previous horse exp?) If so, how much?

How do you think that the high level of jargon on HaJ affects new members who are not familiar with it?

Do you feel that you write differently on the forum than in other places (e.g. text messages, Facebook) due to the rules about using proper capitalization and punctuation and avoiding chatspeak?

  • Crediting my username is fine :)

How long have you been using HaJ Server 2?
    - Since April, so 7 months.

How comfortable are you with HaJ’s terminology? How long did it take you to get to this level of comfort/familiarity?
    - Extremely comfortable/fluent. Probably about two months.

Did you have previous familiarity with some of the terminology (e.g. previous horse exp?) If so, how much?
    - Besides the very basic knowledge of things like draft vs warmblood, and a small amount of previous experience with punnett squares in high school, not really.

How do you think that the high level of jargon on HaJ affects new members who are not familiar with it?
    - I do think it can be intimidating at first, but I think the members who stick around long enough to ask questions settle in well.

Do you feel that you write differently on the forum than in other places (e.g. text messages, Facebook) due to the rules about using proper capitalization and punctuation and avoiding chatspeak?
    - I naturally tend towards avoiding chatspeak in my day to day communications, so no, I don't really find myself writing differently here, with the single exception of using "lol" more often than "XD" to indicate amusement (as a "blending in" - I, like many others, tend to write in a similar "accent" to those I spend time with). Most other platforms I'm on have a younger user base, and thus a higher usage of "XD". "Lol" tends to be a 20-30+ expression, from my experience, while "XD" tends to be 20s and under, I think.

How do you think the posting rules change how the HaJ community functions?
    - I think the posting rules are one of the factors that keeps this community more mature and kind. If someone can take the time and effort to write in a grammatically correct manner, they also tend to be able to take the time to breathe before responding - and have the patience to follow the posting rules, which translates to patience in dealings with other members.

How do you feel that the HaJ community treats new/prospective members?
    - HaJ is, in short, the kindest and most welcoming community I've ever had the pleasure of stumbling across. It was the horses that drew me in, but the community that kept me.

  • How long have you been using HaJ Server 2?

I joined pretty much at the beginning of the game here - Jun. 19, 2013. I have been a member of the 1st server for three years longer than that, though, so a member of the H&J community for about 10 years

How comfortable are you with HaJ’s terminology?

I would consider myself rather fluent in the horse terminology of the game. As far as the genetics terminology, things here are always evolving and I find that, especially with the associated facebook group, I am learning new things about genetics on a regular basis.

How long did it take you to get to this level of comfort/familiarity?

While playing on the first server, I would say it took me around a year to truly understand all the terminology and to use all the features of the game successfully, however, the game has changed so much and the features have become extremely user friendly, so once H&J2 started, I leaped right in, armed with all the knowledge I needed to build my stable up exactly the way I wanted it!

Did you have previous familiarity with some of the terminology (e.g. previous horse exp?) If so, how much?

I've ridden and owned horses for the last 25 years and have had about 20 years experience with breeding, so plenty of experience on that level. When it comes to color genetics, other than owning a few basic books, having searched for bits and pieces on the internet and studying it minimally in high school, I was pretty clueless.

How do you think that the high level of jargon on HaJ affects new members who are not familiar with it?

At first, I'm sure the terminology is confusing and a bit intimidating, but with the forum, buddy chat rooms and facebook available 24/7 there are always players out there that jump right in to help out! This community is one of the most generous I've ever encountered and from the moment I started, the generosity of others has shaped the way I play the game and given me the tools I need to pass that generosity along to new players. :)

Do you feel that you write differently on the forum than in other places (e.g. text messages, Facebook) due to the rules about using proper capitalization and punctuation and avoiding chatspeak?

I absolutely love these rules and try my very best to adhere to them. I think it discourages poor communication behavior and teaches people that would otherwise use text lingo that the things you say/the way you say things is important. In my opinion, these rules have helped avoid a lot of drama that plagues other communities.

How do you think the posting rules change how the HaJ community functions?

I believe the rules help by limiting the amount of miscommunication between players that is often seen on facebook or other games. When a player gets a bit too excited or upset about something, other players tend to help diffuse the situation by responding in a calm manner.

How do you feel that the HaJ community treats new/prospective members?

I have never been a part of such a great community! Since I first started (10 years ago), I can count on one hand the negative experiences I've had and even those were not that bad. I think having such a wide variety of players from so many different places helps to make everyone feel welcome. The best part of H&J is that there is no one way to play the game. Everyone can strive to create their own goals or just have fun with no goals in mind. This community has created so many fantastic tools for new players from the "Available To Adopt" show horse program to contest/giveaways on the forum to chat rooms designed specifically for new players. I often here new players saying they can't wait to be in a position to be able to give back to the community the way they were helped when they first joined! I think that says more than anything else about how well this game runs and all the credit for that goes to having a creator (Ammit) who has provided the ground work and guidance to make it all possible!

User name is fine with me.

  • How long have you been using HaJ Server 2?
-I've been playing for going on 8 months (I joined April 15th, 2018).

How comfortable are you with HaJ’s terminology? How long did it take you to get to this level of comfort/familiarity?
-Im pretty comfortable with it, to be honest. (Although sometimes I feel like Im a little out of my league when I see all of the other more experienced players that have been doing this for years!) it wasn't TOO bad for me when I joined, I had taken a couple biology classes so the lingo wasn't too out there. (Although I can see this being a problem for others?)

Did you have previous familiarity with some of the terminology (e.g. previous horse exp?) If so, how much?
-no, I've never owned my own horse and I haven't been around too many (I do adore them, and I've always wanted my own!) the players on here are so kind though, that literally all you need to do is message or make a post and you will get multiple answers.

How do you think that the high level of jargon on HaJ affects new members who are not familiar with it?
-I think it can be EXTREMELY daunting (Especially for the new players that know little to nothing about biology and horses). Like I said before, though, the community is so kind that it was never really a problem. If you don't know something, and its not in the FAQ section, then players will most definitely help out :p

Do you feel that you write differently on the forum than in other places (e.g. text messages, Facebook) due to the rules about using proper capitalization and punctuation and avoiding chatspeak?
    - Not really. I don't usually talk in "Chatspeak," so its not too bad. I feel like this rule is actually really helpful, because it makes it to where you HAVE to think about what you post before you post/send it. It makes this game a little more professional, if that makes sense.

How do you think the posting rules change how the HaJ community functions?
-yes, in a way, but I don't think its a bad change! The rules are rules for a reason, and they help make the community as welcoming as it can possibly be.

How do you feel that the HaJ community treats new/prospective members?
-I think everyone in this game is extremely kind, no matter the situation. Everyone here shares multiple likes and dislikes, and we all have something in common, so I think that makes it easier to realte and sympathize.

  • You can use my username.

How long have you been using HaJ Server 2?
I've been playing since January of this year.

How comfortable are you with HaJ’s terminology? How long did it take you to get to this level of comfort/familiarity?
I comfortable with all of the terminology. It didn't take me long to be comfortable because I had prior experience with most of it.

Did you have previous familiarity with some of the terminology (e.g. previous horse exp?) If so, how much?
I played another horse sim for several years that was also genetics based so I already knew the basics. The other game didn't use the same genetics coding and wrote it out differently plus more things have been discovered/located since I played the other game. The only things I needed to get use to were Pearl, Satin, Snowflake, DP, Sooty, Sooty+, that all of the Kit mutations are located together, and Fantasy genes.
In real life I volunteered for several years at a therapeutic riding center for people with special needs. During the summer camps (for special needs children and their siblings) I taught the kids about basic horse anatomy, colors, markings, familiar breeds/sizes.
I also have done a bunch of reading about genetics in general but more specially dog and horse color genetics because I find it very interesting especially the 'odd' colors (Lilac, Isabella/Lemon, Silver in dogs)

How do you think that the high level of jargon on HaJ affects new members who are not familiar with it?
I think that if someone is completely unfamiliar with genetics or horses might be put off by the jargon but if you're not interested in one of the other how did you find the game and why would you want to play.

Do you feel that you write differently on the forum than in other places (e.g. text messages, Facebook) due to the rules about using proper capitalization and punctuation and avoiding chatspeak?
I don't write any differently here than I do anywhere else online. I don't use chatspeak other than a few commonly known expressions (lol, brb). I do use some other abbreviations when texting but since I usually use Auto Suggest I only have to type the first few letters before my word shows up.

How do you think the posting rules change how the HaJ community functions?
I think the posting rules prevent the drama/childish behavior that happens in many online forums. It also prevents troll posts that just clutter up the board. The former game I played had lots of drama and childish posts that our rules prevent (as well as now having the 16 or older rule to join the game).

How do you feel that the HaJ community treats new/prospective members?
Although I'm not someone that posts all of the time I feel like a member of the community. This game/forum if the nicest I have ever belonged to. The community is welcoming to new players who follow the rules but also nicely remind those that are not on how they should act. The administration of the game is extremely fair and there aren't cliques that act superior to others. Everyone is welcome to play as they want and to follow their own goals (as long as you aren't cheating).

    Questions:
How long have you been using HaJ Server 2?
I started with HaJ 2 in late October 2013, but began playing HaJ 1 in January 2011.

How comfortable are you with HaJ’s terminology? How long did it take you to get to this level of comfort/familiarity?
At this point, extremely comfortable. It would be almost impossible to give a specific timetable for my learning curve.

Did you have previous familiarity with some of the terminology (e.g. previous horse exp?) If so, how much?
As someone who had a lifelong love of horses and who had been working with a therapeutic riding program since the mid 90's, I was familiar with a lot of basic horse terminology before I started playing. My high school and college education (in the 60's) and many years as a substitute teacher for most subjects had given me some familiarity with the genetic and scientific terms, although since I preferred studying languages to sciences, I was weaker in this branch of the game's terminology.

How do you think that the high level of jargon on HaJ affects new members who are not familiar with it?
I think that new members are probably mystified by some of the game's scientific and other jargon. The custom some players have of abbreviating certain aspects of the game--DHH (Daily Herd Helper), ToT (Trick or Treat rank special), RS (Rank Special), to name a few-- is likely to be equally as confusing as the genetic and horse-specific terminology. I think every new player is greeted with an encouragement to ask any and all questions they have, and expect that those who accept and act on that encouragement to clarify the game jargon and terminology will soon become more comfortable with it.

Do you feel that you write differently on the forum than in other places (e.g. text messages, Facebook) due to the rules about using proper capitalization and punctuation and avoiding chatspeak?
Since I am considerably older than most of the other players and spent 8 years studying Latin, my native style tends to be complete, compound-complex sentences with (hopefully) correct punctuation, and may be as mystifying to my younger fellow players as chatspeak and texting abbreviations are to me. In other words, I always write this way.

How do you think the posting rules change how the HaJ community functions?
I think that without the posting rules the community might have a tendency to divide into tribes based on writing habits--those who habitually used the conventions of modern technological devices hanging about together while those of us who prefer more formal language uses would become another group. Since we all work toward a similar language usage while accepting variations caused by age, habit, or differing native languages, the community remains more cohesive. The additional ruling by the game's creator and owner, Ammit, banning rudeness, cruelty to other players, and quarreling also helps maintain the cordial atmosphere of the game.

How do you feel that the HaJ community treats new/prospective members?
Since I began playing, new players have always been warmly greeted and welcomed with encouragement to ask about anything confusing. First posts usually get several responses, although depending on timing, it may take a few hours. The forum provides a category for New Member Introductions, a special discussion aimed at players who sign up during each month, a Help Me Out section where anyone can post questions and concerns, and a special chat group for new players where more established players are encouraged to stop by and contribute to the conversation. This is one of the friendliest and most welcoming communities I have found online.

  • Don't know if you need more people.... but... .My username or HUSGal is fine (since my username is sooo long. I've considered switching it to HUSGal)

How long have you been using HaJ Server 2? Two years and a month

How comfortable are you with HaJ’s terminology? How long did it take you to get to this level of comfort/familiarity?
I think I felt comfortable about 6 months in with the terminology

Did you have previous familiarity with some of the terminology (e.g. previous horse exp?) If so, how much?

I've bred, competed on, and ridden horses my entire life, so am very familiar with all of the horse terms. However, there are a lot of unique terms on here. So maybe half?

How do you think that the high level of jargon on HaJ affects new members who are not familiar with it?

I think it can be somewhat intimidating. Especially the "even" thing. Is it even by paper or generation? Also, I think some people get confused about SBA and BA. They think its the magic decider for a horse is good to breed to. But it just means compared to their parents.

Do you feel that you write differently on the forum than in other places (e.g. text messages, Facebook) due to the rules about using proper capitalization and punctuation and avoiding chatspeak?

I personally don't change my speaking that much. I don't ever chatspeak, or use modern terms - I try to at school and I just get laughed at.

How do you think the posting rules change how the HaJ community functions?

I think it makes it more mature, but doesn't necessarily make it too persnickety either.... I think its a very important function of making this community wonderful.

How do you feel that the HaJ community treats new/prospective members?

It was good when I first got here, but now its amazing. We're always trying to outdo ourselves on helping newer players.

  • Questions:
How long have you been using HaJ Server 2?
    I joined HJ2 in July of 2014, but I played HJ1 and Shoco/WHG starting about 2007(?). I've been a moderator since November 2017.

How comfortable are you with HaJ’s terminology? How long did it take you to get to this level of comfort/familiarity? Even coming from the other server I found it really hard in the beginning! I couldn't make any sense of some of the forum post titles! One of my goals is to figure out a way to make things a bit easier to understand, but even if there is a description somewhere, new people may not read it! That's why we created the Beginners Barn chat room. It probably took me a year to get REALLY familiar with the lingo.

Did you have previous familiarity with some of the terminology (e.g. previous horse exp?) If so, how much? Yes, I had a horse as a teenager, and worked professionally on a breeding farm after college.

How do you think that the high level of jargon on HaJ affects new members who are not familiar with it? I think it can be VERY distracting and off-putting.

Do you feel that you write differently on the forum than in other places (e.g. text messages, Facebook) due to the rules about using proper capitalization and punctuation and avoiding chatspeak? No.

How do you think the posting rules change how the HaJ community functions? I agree with the other respondants, that it makes people slow down and be more thoughtful and mature with their responses. I've noticed that the very few times we have had to ask someone to remember the rules more than once, they did not stay on the forum (or even the game) long, but that is NOT a conclusive study! Just an observation!

How do you feel that the HaJ community treats new/prospective members? Literally; my job is to be sure they feel welcomed and support them through the learning process. The community here is friendly and generous, but does not tolerate bad actors.
