Starting Over, looking for ideas
  • I have been thinking long and hard about this, and I have decided to step away from breeding my current lines. Hitting 14.0 was my goal for a long time, and I achieved it, but I am not really sure I have the heart for the long, slow, slog to 15.0.

I will be spending the next few months flushing my best mares and stockpiling straws, just in case I ever want to pick it back up again, but I am retiring my Era 0 line. I will continue to bootstrap in order to keep my show horse pool going, but that is it for Era 0 for me. At least for now.

That being said, I need ideas for a new line. So, show me your horses. I am fond of dark, sooty+, maybe chestnut or buckskin. I would rather avoid excessive white this time around. No fantasy genes, with the possible exception of Macchiato. I do have the license.

Convince me what my next line should focus on.

  • If you like S+, I am a fan of S+ on wild bay. Subtle, yet fiery and elegant!

  • S+ dp buckskin is amazing~!

I'm partial to silver blue roans myself. Going to make a new line around this lot, but add w8 to them. These have S+, which I also like with this combo

I have 2G Silver Blue roans (and Silver Blue roan appys) mares and (non appy Silver Blue roan) stallion, if you would like to use them at any point to help with your Silver Blue roan line!
    Love,

  • @SpryOfJune thanks for the offer, but I want to start from scratch with a foundation. Because I have a very specific idea though, I have to gmt. Just collecting them at the moment. Not too sure how long it'll take me to get them all together , but it's a goal to work towards!

  • @ObsidianKitsune
I assumed you'd start from foundation, but I wasn't sure if you'd need a stallion or mare beyond that, if you wanted to avoid breeding relatives. :))

  • I'm not sure PT's of 15 would be a thing anyway without the double boosting that some HJ1 lines have done, I'm pretty sure the breeding cap (on HJ1 anyway) is roughly around the 14PT equivalent, so wouldn't get way above that without heaps of effort

As for your new lines, I recommend the sooty+ DP chestnuts or sooty+ DP buckskins!!
  • A line I decided to start is crossing (black) Liver roans to S+ Buckskin, I just hope it works as great as it does in my head. Recommendation wise taking the DP chestnuts to the DP S+ Buckskins could be stunning.
  • Here are a few of my buckskins. :)

I thought this one was a chestnut. I was surprised by Buckskin.

  • Personally, I love DP as well as s+ (though I don't have enough of the latter yet...) Buckskins are nice but macchiato does tend to dilute out the darkness, be it liver chestnuts or buckskins, quite a lot. I like having some chrome or appy on most all my horses so if you wanted to stay away from white but still wanted color that's always an option. Also adding the Dun gene can add some nice dimension from the striping without the addition of any white genes if that's what your going for.

Whatever you pick I'm sure it will be great, can't wait to see what new genes you decide to work with! :)

  • Personally, if I were starting over, Id wanna try to breed for this guys genetics.

Het sooty+, Het dp, Het white m.

I know it would be kinda difficult to do without modifying at least one foundation, but god.. Its just stunning.

  • I'm gonna go with HTRanch, those S+ wild bays are GORGEOUS!! Actually, I think any exploration of Wild Bay combinations would be cool! You could toss in GP to make it more of a challenge!

This guy was a goal of mine since a few months after I started. Flaxen black liver with w10 and kitm. Only just achieved it last month. Now I'm trying to get my pts up.
  • Snowflake and KP together, especially with pearl on black. I'm in love with this lady.

God grant me the hbs to buy the ponies I need,
The fortitude to resist the shiny ones I truly don't,
And the wisdom to know there will always be more next time.
  • Thanks for that tidbit of info Kintara. Definitely re-affirms my choice to start over.

I am trying to create up a storm of sty horses, I have a couple era 5 liver studs laying around. Going to see what I can spin up.

  • I agree with the folks talking about DP and sooty in buckskins, they can dapple out really nice even without sooty + involved.

I've also found that brown is a fun base color to play with and it doesn't cost an arm and a leg to get a herd going. I enjoy the variety you can get and the rich shades of brown-based dilutes. This guy is a brown buckskin who also has sooty+:
