Show Horse Value Question
  • Show horse - which to keep? I am trying to decide if it is worth culling show horses for value. Show horses that level off in a good place (generally any of the "W" classes) continue to earn points throughout their careers. Horses that level off in an "L" class don't add much. And they cost to enter shows.
But what if a horse has a few hundred points and has leveled off in a "bad" place? Is the show horse worth barn space?

What are your strategies for keeping show horses?

  • I keep them all lol

But if you want to know if the horse is worth it calculate the costs of showing it twice a week at its current level and take its daily profit (times 7 for the week) and subtract the showing costs.

If the horse is still making you money keep it.

If it’s leveled off and placing last most of the time and not earning enough to pay its own bills then send it off.

But if you can replace that horse with a younger horse with the same or more points that’s good too.

ETA: exhibit A is making a profit of 216hbs per week not including the 50hbs it takes to show her.
  • Thanks! We'll explained.
  • Your welcome.

I’ve been playing hunt and jump since 2006.

With the previous show system it was important to keep on top of your herd. Show fees were high and I used to have a spreadsheet I’d update every time I logged in that would tell me which horses to show and when for the best chance at making a profit. The horse had to be showing to make any money, sitting in a stall just took up space. Every other week I’d go through the levelled off horses and send the bottom portion of each age group to the auction.

The current show system doesn’t focus on when to show more like how many horses do you have that have shown and collected points at some point. If showing really isn’t their thing they can still earn you money if they have points (although I just keep showing everyone since it doesn’t cost that much per show and my daily profit far exceeds the costs).

The show fees are so low that horses will be able to cover most of their showing costs through their lives but the combined total points between your whole herd most likely covers for any slackers

It’s been years since I’ve culled show horses and my show horses have been the bread and butter of my barns. They are the ones that have paid for new barns to hold more horses. Usually I can put enough IV’s aside to buy a new 1000 stall barn for my show horses by the time I’ve finished filling the last one.

I would rather skip a breeding season to save money up for a new barn than cull my show horses to make room for new horses
  • Is there anyway I can see how much showing costs for the different classes? I always assumed it is the same amount all around.
  • If you click on "My Show Entries" under the 'Showing' category on the left side of the screen, it'll show you entry fees and horses per class.

  • Thank you so much. I feel so stupid now! How could I miss that?
  • Don't feel bad. I almost had to post to ask how to log out because I didn't scroll down far enough to see the log out option.
