Another Genetic Practice Comp Additional Prize Added Closed
  • We had a generous donation of another foal for this competition.

Mostly the same as last time. -1 per wrong allele. +1 point if you get the exact words of the color name. (Not necessarily in the correct order). First tiebreaker is White Factor. Second tiebreaker is who posted first.

This time the order of the alleles do count. For example Aa instead of aA will be -1. If its aA+ instead of Aa then -2.

(Hint Allele inherited from sire comes first, then the dam)

    Contest Pony 2

Per usual, the prize is the pony itself, but this time the purse is 25,000$

At least after 8PM gametime tomorrow, and at least 5 people have posted.

Edit: New Prize in the pot, as I've received another donation!

I have to go, but I will send your prize ASAP

  • @HunterUnderSaddleGirl, thank you!

however upon looking at the foals genetics im not sure if i actually did infact win. as there are quite a few alleles on there that i guessed incorrect. i dont want to prize to go to me if i dont actually deserve it. :)
  • I'll go look again, but I thought that you and one other person only missed 2. You won by tiebreaker.

  • Also, FYI for those who didn't put the Patn1 it was minus 1. If you put it down but pull the wrong alleles, still minus 1.

  • Oops, sorry, you were right. The winner is @TrueBlueHorses.

    Sending you prizes now.

  • Thanks so much @HunterUnderSaddleGirl, I honestly didnt think I would win, I'm not the best when it comes to the games genetics :D

  • I'm really liking these competitions HUSG! I'm trying to figure out how I came to the conclusions I did - I used punnet squares and mine wasn't even close (really). I guess it comes down to luck at some points - like which parent would given flaxen (or in this case - both!)

    what a dizzying world!
  • As hard as grading these have been, I'm so glad I'm on the judging side, not the participant side. It does look really hard, and I think a lot of it is indeed luck. And I do try to find hard ones too. Because they are often the most pretty ones too.

I really miss Tagamon Forrest. He frequently produced 12PT+ foals that looked unique and were perfect for this competition. But I only got a couple 12PT+ this season, and donated one and kept the others. But I still wanted to donate those but they were pure white.

  • @cadieness, the way I worked it out was:

    1. Look at the parents and the foal. Then cross reference all three to make a rough guesstimate of the foals colour.
    2. I then got my notebook out, and wrote down the parents full genome/genetics
    3. From here I just worked my way down the line for both parents using punnett squares.

It's not necessarily luck when using punnet squares, its more so which is the more likely outcome. When using punnett squares, you will encounter Mendelian ratios which differ depending on whether the parents are homozygous or heterozygous for that gene.

Now there were plenty of punnett squares that gave me several genotypic outcomes for the foal. But through referring back to my guesstimate of the foals colour, it served as a process of elimination until I had an answer. This was the case with the foals Dun gene. The foals sire was 'Dd' and the dam was 'dd', this gives you the following outcomes: 'Dd':'Dd':'dd':'dd'; 50:50 chance of getting the right outcome. But because in my guesstimate of the foals colour I said it was dun, it narrowed my answer down to being 'Dd' as the Dun gene is dominant; in other words for the foal to be phenotypic (physical appearance of gene) for the Dun gene, it had to be either homozygous dominant 'DD' or Heterozygous 'Dd or dD'.

And its similar with the Flaxen gene, the sire had 'fF' and the dam had 'Ff", meaning the outcomes are fF:ff:FF;Ff; A 3:1 ratio in terms of the genes phenotype. Like you I was confused with the Flaxen gene, but upon researching the gene found that for it to be expressed in a horse's physical appearance (phenotype of the gene), the Flaxen gene had to be homozygous recessive (ff). Now when looking back at the foal it is notable that its mane and tail is a different shade to its coat. Normally coats and mane/tail colours share a direct relationship; i.e. Bays have black m/t; Chestnuts have red m/t, etc. Being a Buckskin horse, the foal should have a black mane and tail; Buckskin is a Bay horse with a cream gene/cream dilution. But the foal displayed a red mane and tail, a colour that did not match the coat, meaning that another dilution gene must be in play. It was from here that I ruled out champagne (not in his lineage), pearl (cream carrier not a pearl carrier), and silver (mane and tail is red not silver/white), meaning Flaxen was the only dilution gene left, and thus the one responsible, meaning he had to be homozygous recessive (ff) for the flaxen gene.

That's just the way I worked it out, it is a very long process and I will admit took me almost an hour to finalise the foals possible genome, but it does work. It may work for you, and if you haven't already, have a go at @HunterUnderSaddleGirl new gene contest, I would recommend trying this method and seeing if it helps you out.

Whilst I am still trying to wrap my head around a few genes in this game, I do have a pretty solid understanding of genetics in the real world, and will be happy to help you or anyone else with any further questions on genetics.

    Thanks,
    TBH
