Looking for Advice on How to Choose some Good Studs for RGS GMT Work
  • Hey guys. Looking to pick a few brains if anyone is willing to offer some advice.

As some of you already know, WyldWood is an alt account that I started to give me a place to work through my infatuation with DP/Sty/S+ in livers, bays, and browns. (Since I only breed for black based on my main account, BlackWyld)
This account is still in its fledgling stages and I cannot believe the serendipity of having the two main things I am breeding for show up in the RGS!
    I am so excited!
I am going to be soooooo broke! $-) :-((

    Anyway!
I am still very new to the world of bays and browns. I want to work on using these sales to create a few perfect foundation studs for my lines here and would love advice on how to go about it, specifically to get the biggest bang for my buck.

My ultimate goals for this account are:
-To breed evenly by gen and paper.
-To breed quality horses in deep, dark, rich brown hues.
-To breed livers, bays, browns, silver bays, silver browns, buckskins, and chocolate palominos.
-To work my way up to having lines that are entirely hom S+ and hom DP.
-To have lines in both Riding Horse and Draft bone sizes. (I want to breed warmbloods too but can get those by mixing my RH and Drafts)
    -To breed for height.
-No dilutions (excepting cream), no pearl, dun, champagne, roan, or things that fade over time like appaloosa. (I want to showcase those delicious, -rich warm woody tones as much as possible.)
-To try to have studs that are Perfect Foundation or higher and work on having mares to match.

So…. My main question…. How can I get started on attaining some of these goals with just a few starting stallions, so I don’t break the bank?
I am hoping to focus on just GMTing one or two studs to be homDP/homS+ for each bone size to get me started then wait for these genes to rotate through again in the future to add more foundation boys.

Most of these colours and genetics can be mixed and matched a bit correct? Like, if I had a liver stud, I could mix him with brown and bay girls and, get brown or bay or liver foals?

These are the current foundation studs that I have on this account: Studs

These should be all my PerFound/ExPer/ExPro foundie mares: Mares

These should be all my youngish RS ladies: RS Mares

I am not above gender swapping a mare if she would be a better fit as a stud.
I am not in a rush yet. I will be spending the next two weeks seeing if I can find or roll any suitable HH and RS to help me meet my goals.
I am not worried about mares at the moment. Once I get a couple of boys sorted I will work on finding them the right ladies.

Since most of my Yule logs are drafts I was thinking about focusing on browns just in drafts right now?
Maybe focus on bays in Riding Horses for now?

    Please help! [-O<

Breeding for DP, Sty, and S+ in Liver, Browns, Buckskins, and Silver Bays/Browns/Buckskins.
Would like to add WC one day.
  • The Cherry Drop herd helpers are homozygous DP, so a good choice for you to start with. They have A+ which is a very red bay, but if you want brown you could gmt the A+ to At, which is brown. The Freaky Fridays are homo DP too but they are harder to come by. If you find one soon, S+ is on sale to buy until the end of the month! Adding the S+ will darken up the Cherry Drops too, if you add the brown, as they are made with no sooty
    Thanked by 2BlackWyld WyldWood
  • *Speaking for WyldWood from this account because I am in the middle of breeding and don't want to switch over to reply at the moment* :P

Yeah the aim is to take advantage of the gene sales going on right now. (I am so excited!)

Ideally I would be aiming for Cherry Drops and Freaky Fridays simply for that guarentee of them being hom DP (and thus saving me $20 a pop per stud).

I have a FF stud on this account from the last time it came around but I am holding out for KitM or W10 for a project on this account with him. Any other FFs I have are getting a bit up there in age. I think the youngest is an 8 year old mare. I have considered using her, she is still GMTable but I am not sure if 8 is too old to bother with.

I have a couple of draft CDs and one RH mare that I may gender change and GMT to be at least hom S+. I am not a huge fan of wild bay so I would remove the A+ as well. Maybe leave the RH bay and make a draft brown?

Are Yule Logs het DP? I can't remember. I was really hoping to be able to use my YL boy but maybe he would be better changed to a mare if I can find more hom DP RSs.

Always looking to buy foundation brindle drafts in black, blue roan, grullo, classic champagne, etc.

I work a 7day on 7day off schedule and my activity here will reflect that.
I can be very scatterbrained and forgetful so if I don't get back to you in a decent amount of time just poke me.
  • I don't think the Yule logs are DP, there might be the odd one with DP just as a random create chance. The good thing about adding brown to the Cherry Drops is that you can use it to take off the wild bay. And seeing you would be adding the S+ anyway, I think there would be less actual gmt work for you with a Cherry Drop compared to a FF

  • Thank you for the advice Kintara.
I greatly appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts.

Here is a CD boy I just added S+ to.

I really dislike how the wild bay hardly shows the S+.
I will GMT him At or just A after I have sat and pondered it a bit more.
    *Edit - added the At*
If I GMTed the A+ to At I could still breed him to bay mares and possibly get bay foals and with him being eE I I could cross him with chestnuts too correct?

If I used the FF mare at this point I think I would keep her liver anyway. I eventually want a homDP/homS+ liver line on WyldWood anyway.
But we will see if the rumours of a FF release for Halloween come to fruition or not.

  • Yes I'd definitely change the A+ to At, although he'll still be bay because of the other A. See how he looks then. If you change the A to a, he'll be darker than if you change the A to At, because homozygous brown is lighter than het brown
    Thanked by 2BlackWyld WyldWood
  • Oh! Okay! Thank you!

In the long run I am definitely aiming for darker.

The bay/brown genes are still confusing to me. I am going to go play in the horse search to see the varying results.

  • Love that guy :) If he was mine I would take the A off - but you know how I feel about A :D
But either way he looks gorgeous - you must be pleased :X

  • Dinascar, I was thinking of you while I have been pondering these gene sales. :D

I am definitely not ready to call him done yet. I still need to decide what I ultimately want to do with him(bay/brown wise). I have lots of time to think on it since he is only two.

  • Your plans sound good! I just did something very similar -- I took a regular bay and gave him the S+ and changed his A to At. I'm super happy with the results.

When I was generating stallions for this, I used a Perfect Foundation HH. If you're at all interested, I'd be happy to give you either or both of the ones I didn't use at create price. Sounds like you're set for drafts but I thought I'd offer just in case. :)

Sadly, I just sold my chestnut-with-silver foundation stud in auction last week, or I'd have given him to you. Bummer on that timing.

Good luck with your project, it sounds great!

  • @GeneverGinger
King Oberon is gorgeous! I love that red belly of his!

Thank you for your kind offer!

I am pretty much set for drafts at this point. LOL!
I actually have this ExPro silver boy who is in line for some gene work:

    ExProSilver2998421

And I do have some ExPerf/ExPro/and Perfect Foundation girls who I could gender swap in a pinch if I needed too.

I am just going to try to see what I can pick up that is already hom DP before I work on any more I think.

How much is mare lag going to hurt me if I have a bunch of Exceptionally Perfect or Perfect Foundations boys?
It is going to take me a bit to build up a mare base to match them.
Even with a full pasture bonus is the difference going to be noticable using regular created mares?

  • Oh, that silver boy is handsome even without the extra work!

Even with full pasture bonus you're going to have higher snip rates using regular mares with an ExPro/ExPerf stallion, but it's definitely doable if you're willing to put up with a smaller foal crop. (That's what I do with my Hidden Gates stud -- it just means I get a lot of pretty altered foals for my show barn. It's not so bad. :) ) IMO you need the pasture bonus to really make it worthwhile, though.
    Thanked by 1WyldWood
  • Mare lag of Ex perfect stallions with perfect foundation/regular create mares I find isn't too bad. You will get less intact, but the pay off is that the intact ones are better quality, I still get plenty of intacts. I agree that you really need to use the pastures though
