Pasture fail....again...
-
Ok I really stink at breeding....had my horses in the pasture fir 20 days before breeding. Papers matched between my 17 mares and 3 stallions and low and behold only 1 foal passed testing...ugh maybe I should give up on breedingBreeder of the tallest drafts
-
I've had it happen too. Don't give up.
I ended up culling pretty much everyone and starting over from scratch. I'm getting much better results now.
What do you breed for? Is there something I can help with? -
Can you send a link to the adults that were in the pasture? Maybe we can try to help you figure out what happened. Some seasons are like that though. My first season I was breeding foundations with 30 days bonus, only 2 colts passed and no fillies.Thanked by 1ChevalStables
-
Yes, please post links :) There can be many reasons, but so much easier to find out why by seeing the parents :)Thanked by 1ChevalStables

Sometimes the random number generator just isn’t on your side. 17 breedings is a pretty small sample size.
If it makes you feel better, I only got 10 intact foals out of 87 breedings. -
But when they have a pasture bonus, she would have better odds if they are a good match. When I get a good match going I will around 3 out of 4 passing SBA. I still weed out alot more, but after just SBA I would have expected higher numbers. The more generations they have, the harder they are to mactch!

It looks like some of the mares are higher than the studs because they are multiple generations of Red/B and the studs are not. I didn't look at all of them but that and luck seems to be cause.

Should I cull some of them and start over? If so what do I look for in new stock as far as a good producer? I've always been mostly a breeder, but am currently tly staying afloat on what I make from snipped coals at auctionBreeder of the tallest drafts
-
Some of the mares are definitely better quality than the studs, some of the mares are not as good, and some are about equal. The problem with throwing multiple studs, of varying breeding ability, in with multiple mares of varying ability, is you cannot control who breeds which mare. So it’s most likely your boys and girls all bred to each other in a way that made it almost impossible for the foals to pass testing. It’s going to be hard to tell the breeding ability of some of the horses, because they are not evenly bred.Thanked by 1Ammit

Probably your best bet would be to start over from scratch with foundations. If you want liver, I have a het DP liver stud I can sell you. Start with create sooty flaxen chestnut and dark chestnut mares.
You also really need to get yourself some show horses if you are only staying afloat that way. The auctions have tons of 200-300 point horses you can ship yourself and keep for showing. -
Also remember that you can get 2-3 superior to sire colts within the same paper level.
So there’s a range within the paper levels. I think you’ll have better luck if you also try to match generations and paper levels.
If you look at the colt that passed his sire and dam were equal papered B / red and each parent had a C / yellow parent (the one mare wasn’t papered but as a regular hh so most likely yellow) so each side was close in quality -
I agree with Fallen and Bandit. Fallen has some nice horses, so she's an excellent sorce for liver drafts. :) I'm sure there are lots of people that would be willing to help as well. If I find some foundation livers, or create any by chance, I'll try and post them here.
You can get some good hbs for some of those mares (the milestone granddaughters) if you should chose to sell them. Use that to help with a foundation base, and start collecting show horses. 3/1 show/breeder seems to be a good balance to keep the hbs flowing.
[Or you can use the breed and ship method to get hbs. (Create mares, breed them to a stud, sell mares, foals, and stud at auction- all the foals are pure profit). If you want, you could run them all through SBA so you aren't passing any inferior breeding stock into the game, but it's up to you. Just don't test anything before you breed them! ]

When breeding by hand, not in a pasture, I sometimes found that all or most of the foals were being neutered. I would usually stop breeding for that day before I'd finished that breeding project and come back to it another day. Usually the random generator odds would be somewhat better at another time. All sheer luck, of course, but waiting for a new day somehow seemed to help.De gustibus non disputandum. "There's no arguing about tastes."

I have an uneven herd I breed and it is trickier than even breeding If done right you can get faster advancements but finding the level of each stud and mare can take a few seasons so starting with uneven is usually slower. I would leave any of the mares you truly want to keep stored in the pasture and start an even foundation herd swap the foundations with the keep backs in pasture and match them with a foundation stud. Also I've noticed when full pasture bonus is in effect on the mares I get more intacts some season breeding those yellow to a low B papered stud. The random generator is always as well so you can get some seasons where nothing seems to work just tweak the herd a bit and try again. On your uneven keeper mares hand breed them to different level studs until you figure out what level they are at such as a few times to a low B then a mid then a high B. I work with Liver foundations on my draft account and would love to help out if you would like.
-
if you need a liver or 2 to help with foundation stock, send me a pm :)

If you breed these mares with a het DP or Hom DP liver stallion you can get some liver babies. With a het liver stallion they are not guaranteed, but with a hom DP stallion you should get het DP babies. (So if you can find a Freaky Friday stallion, which hopefully we might get on Halloween, you should get liver babies) :)
I will keep an eye out and keep trying for you. All these girls have passed SBA and have had all testing done, so they are the best from the creates offered. -
Freaky Fridays are only for friday the 13th. The next one is in september 2019 :)Thanked by 1AHayesHorses

It has been mentioned a few times that one might come out on Halloween, which is why I mentioned it. I can try and find the threads if it helps.
-
-
The typical Halloween HH is the Trick or Treat one though. It would be nice if we got the Freaky Friday but I'm not holding my breath. @FallenShadows714 possibly the herd helper popped up randomly on someones HH reroll
-
@ApollosLegacy I put the above horses up for sale for you if you want them. I'll be gone for a bit. I wish you the best of luck.
-
@AHayesHorses I believe Freaky Fridays are special event only, aren't they? However, there's other Freakys with Dec 22 birthdates, so maybe something special happened that day since it was near Christmas?ISO any and all Silver Pocket Watches!
God grant me the hbs to buy the ponies I need,
The fortitude to resist the shiny ones I truly don't,
And the wisdom to know there will always be more next time.Thanked by 1kintara -
last December had all sorts of special herd helpers and gene sales each day so could have been that Friday was a freaky Friday hh
-
Oh wow @ChevalStables you are amazing! I appreciate it sooooo much!! I will gladly take all of the girls. As long as its okay that I wait until tomorrow after the auction is over and I have some more funds.Breeder of the tallest draftsThanked by 1AvacadoStables

@ApollosLegacy That's fine with me. I have them up for public sale because I'm not sure when/if I will be on over the next few days. If I'm able to be on and see anymore HH that could help you, I will grab them and create some and send you a message. Take your time.Thanked by 1ApollosLegacy

SUCCESS! I have a major cull going on and I kept only foundations and 2/3rd generations making sure to mark in each horses name the generation. I hand bred 3 pairs tonight, and am 2/3 for complete intact foals passing testing! Yay!! Thank you so much each and every one of you lovelies for the fantastic advice.Breeder of the tallest drafts

Breeding for all version of black drafts. (Including black liver)
Help me build my black brindle army!
Always looking to buy foundation brindle drafts in black, blue roan, grullo, classic champagne, etc.
I work a 7day on 7day off schedule and my activity here will reflect that.
I can be very scatterbrained and forgetful so if I don't get back to you in a decent amount of time just poke me. -
Right lol it's the little things. But it's a start.Breeder of the tallest drafts

Just happy to help and that you were able to get some foundation mares to start you off. I'm happy you've been able to find some others around the forums as well. :) Looks like there are some awesome studs in here too. I'm really happy to hear the pairings you've done have been better.
