a papered? c papered? what?
  • hey, im fairly new at this game ad im seeing things that say 'c papered' or 'a papered' what does that mean and is that only for certain horses or can i get them too? thanks!
  • Yes you can get them, but without an upgraded account I don't think you can test for paper scores.

    Stallions: Star, A, B, C
    Mares: Gold, Blue, Red, Yellow

Gold and star are the highest.

All foundations are c and yellow paper. Except for some rank specials (usually given out on holidays) or "exceptionally perfect/producing" horses(which paper red/b)
  • Paper levels are a rather broad indicator of breeding ability. Horses with higher breeding ability will produce foals with, more or less, better breeding and showing ability, but there's a lot of variability involved, so it's not guaranteed.

Breeding stallions to mares of the same breeding ability level (C-Yellow, B-Red, etc.) tends to produce more intact foals, but the range of breeding ability for each letter/color is quite broad, so not all horses with the same paper level will be equal.

  • If you haven't browsed the FAQ yet, I highly recommend it! It's been getting a great overhaul lately.

The section on testing (particularly Breeding Inspection) will explain about papering: http://hj2.huntandjump.com/faq.php#34

  • A quick question: If you have a star stud, is it possible to have a colt who test superior to sire? in other words, is the star category fixed or is there a high and low? Trying to decide whether to keep colts who tests asa as their star sire. Thanks!
  • Yep, you can still have superior colts. Each paper level covers a range of breeding ability (which is a hidden, behind the scenes number), and as far as any of us know I don't think there's a cap on that number. Comp testing looks at that number to decide which horse is better.

C papering is 100% or less, B papering is 101-109%, and A papering covers at least 110%-115 and upwards. I would guess star might be 120% breeding ability but since these numbers are behind the scenes we don't know.

One of these days when I'm a bigger barn and have the hbs to spare, I'm going to apply 1% breeding boosts to clones until I hit star papering to get exact numbers (if it's even possible, lol. It'll be expeeeensive).

  • There is a wide range covered by the *Star papering. It's been quite a few real-life years, but back when I was first playing in 2011-2013, We had a leaderboard that displayed the top 500 stallions in the game. All of them were *Star papered. The ones at the bottom of the list were producing offspring in the 11.0-11.5 range, with mostly *Gold and *Star offspring. The ones at the top of the list were producing foals in the 12.0+ range, all of them *Star and *Gold papered. I can remember the excitement when the first 12+ foals began to appear, and again when we reached 13 PTs.

These days, with the breeders clubs for eras and many different colors and patterns, the leaderboards are completely different from those slightly earlier days of the game.

Keeping colts who test about as good as their *Star sires is probably not a great idea, if your goal is to chase higher and higher PT scores, but since we have "mare lag" as the papering gets higher, since there is one more test for weeding out colts (Comparison testing), the quality of the *Gold mares will be harder to determine until they have enough foals to get an Average Foal PT score that will be a good marker of which ones are better. Less than 10 foals is a small sample, I would say.

The cap is roughly 140% I think, it's close to that on HJ1 anyway. And you wouldn't be able to boost them to star as any horse is only allowed a max of 5% boost
  • @kintara Interesting! And no, it would be through boosting the clone. (I believe that's still allowed?) That's how Ammit showed different percentages for a breeding project she did with horses in pasture. I've also seen it done on HJ1 before: someone was selling off an A papered foundie that was a clone.
