Where did the Kit Promoter come from?
  • This is the very first kit promoter foal I have ever bred, sadly she got snipped. But I am confused as to where it came from.

    My mare:

    The stallion I bred to:

  • The stallions line has Jack Knife, who has extensive KP scattered through his line. I noticed a couple of the same foundation studs from the stallions line in the mares line as well, all going back to Dark Star’s Invested and Dark Sun Rising. Most likely where the KP came from
  • Both parents almost have to be het KP - they both have two KIT mutations, so if either is hom they are hiding it really well among their white spotting.
The sire has a good deal of DarkStar in his pedigree, and mama has some too. I don't remember offhand the horses that have been IDd as carriers, but I know there is a lot of KP in DarkStar's herds and much of it is hiding as het or without the KIT genes to switch it on.

eta: Or you could ask FallenShadows.
  • Thanks for confirming the stallion to be het kp, I had been meaning to do at some point.
  • Both parents MUST be at least het KP to produce a Hom KP foal.

The mare goes back to DS Dark Sun Rising who was het KP, and to Abbey Road’s NeoGenesis who was Hom KP.

The stallion goes back to Dark Sun Rising and also to KTF Arctic Shine who was also het KP.

Whether either has other foundation ancestors with KP I’m not sure but a quick glance shows me those names that I know from way back.

Since these guys have such incredibly long pedigrees, hidden genes like KP can get lost, and then found again when the stars align for you!

  • Obviously this means both parents have at least one parent who was/is het KP, and on back. If you or Prancer are interested in a few Hom KP straws or mares to test breed to, I’d be happy to offer them to see if you can identify other carriers.
  • And one more note before I’m done—in the way way way back, way before I started playing, adding KP or DP or GP in the GMT Lab didn’t look like it does now where it shows
    ? To ?

    Then it showed as
    +KP
So you can look at those really really old guys and see what their owners added to them!
