What gene gives the roan like stain?

I love this roaning out stain. Im not even sure what its called.
Im kindda sad this cute filly wont pass the cut. Just havnt hit the spray me button yet. Ugh
  • Are you talking about the sort of roany fuzzy look, same as the bottom half of the black on her sire? That's KP, Kit Promoter. You got a lucky foal - now you know Hour of the Moon is het KP and can breed her to other KP studs to try for a filly that will pass, and in the meantime, this one will make a super cute show pony! :)

God grant me the hbs to buy the ponies I need,
The fortitude to resist the shiny ones I truly don't,
And the wisdom to know there will always be more next time.
  • Actually, on second look, her dam's sire is hom KP, just not showing it well, so you could know from him that her dam is het.

  • Sweet. Thanks Lallyhop.
  • Of course! And also, even though she's snipped, you can still enter her in the KP club since she's showing it, and with a PT score that high she might have a chance at making the leaderboard of the "Points Earned by Lined Horses" section when she's old as long as she's regularly shown.

Im guessing he is hom kp?

You cant tell if het kp but only by breeding with another hom or het kp?
  • Yup, he’s in the club so he’s hom!

KP is sorta like SNF in that it needs to be hom and have specific genes to show. For snowflake, that’s hom snf and at least het lp (appy). For Kit Promoter, it’s hom KP and hom kit genes - so it could be roan and tobiano (kit r kit to) or hom w20 or any other combination of kit genes, as long as there’s no kit without a gene.

  • This is usually referred to as the “KP cloud” effect as it looks like fog or cloud over the coat. Some horses show tons of cloud, others show very little even though they’re Hom KP. Having a mostly white horse (not uncommon with 2 Kit patterns) will cover up the KP cloud with white markings, so breeding for KP can be difficult.

  • If I can help you with straws or stock, let me know. I breed for KP myself and your baby here goes back to my lines (Day of the Moon was mine)

Im little surprised he is still around that far back.
I would love help to build a little line of KP. I love her dark base with the KP.

Grap this guy. He went back to the Day of the Moon. Maybe he will toss a few foals like my filly. Now to find mares.
  • Now I have another thing I might want to breed for! Gosh darn these forums and their pretties...
  • I have a herd of KP on HJ1 and I am really excited to continue breeding and growing that herd up.

I mark my homo and het kp but it’s like Russian roulette trying to figure out if the foals from het kp inherited the KP or not.
  • I had KP pop up in my herd now due to bootstrapping with stallions that came from Dark Star. I've started breeding their daughters back to them and discovered I now have a bunch of KP and KP carriers. I've even found that some of the random Blue papered mares I've picked up from auction are KP carriers.

I have 2 foals still on the KP highest foal PT this year...I had more until they got pushed off.

Neither of them have visible KP clouds but I have a few that are more colored and have nice clouds.
  • @MakeMeABird , you have "kit m" in your filly's name; she isn't KITm, it isn't the same thing as KP / KIT promoter. KP is a 'hidden' gene, it doesn't get listed in their color DNA code. KITm would show in her code where she is hom tobiano.

Day Of The Moon and Moon Puzzle linked above are both KITm; that's what causes their scattered white markings.
    More power!
  • So it's likely this lady likely has at least one copy of KP?

  • Cadie, no. That’s appy varnish.

KP never shows up in foundations in the game spontaneously. You have to add it from the GMT Lab. A horse MUST also have two Kit patterns to show KP. Can be homozygous for one pattern or any combination of two Kit patterns, but it will never show the cloud if there’s only one Kit pattern like this mare.

It can show up unexpectedly in lines where someone hasn’t been breeding for it specifically like this foal in the original post though and that’s a lot of fun to find.

  • No that is varnish. KP is not creatable, it must be bought in the gmt lab. Also, KP is not visible when the have one copy, they must be homozygous and have two kit genes to show.

  • And even if they are Hom for KP with two kit patterns like Day of the Moon up above, there may be no visible KP cloud. Higher White Factor will usually give you a bigger cloud, but higher white Factor usually means there is more white on the body which may obscure the cloud (yeah, seriously, it’s screwy!).

  • Gotcha! Thanks guys!
