Brown? Is it through an HH?
-
Aside from the "True Breeding Brown Appaloosa" what HH gives me a chance at a brown horse? I know Silver Bay links could give Silver Brown, but I'm looking more for just a plain ol brown, not silver or appy (yet).Love,
Spry -
there is a hom Brown hh. a het Brown also. Other 'Bay' hh, hom Sooty could... Buckskins. Yule Log, of course. almost any of the markings-based hh or PF, ExPerf, the 'show' hhs...
Or just buy a brown?
Snapdragon had a very nice hom At colt for sale, with an all Yule Log pedigree. -
I believe that's a HOM brown hh.
-
I created these girls for you. :) they are Homozygous brown. They'll be up in your buddy chat

@CrewCut
I hadn't realized we had Hom/Het Brown HH. Oops. I forgot Yule Log existed, and wasn't thinking of the Hom Sooty. And didn't realize that Buckskin could give Brown.
I'd buy one, but I'm starting something, and would be buying a load of browns. At that rate, I feel creating would be simpler/cheaper, sorta. And thank you.
@MariaChapinFarm3
It is! Oooh! Thank you!Love,

fair enuf (but Snappy is in the kitchen and says if you want that 2nd gen Yule Log bred, and he hasn't gelded the colt yet, he'll sell cheap.)
-
@CrewCut
Huh? Some parts Of that just, make no sense to my squish brain this morning. LolLove,

Brown is an agouti gene, so it's a kind of bay, and it's naturally occurring. If the horse has another kind of bay, it won't be brown, it'll just be bay or wild bay, depending. It's written as At in the gene test. Bay HHs won't turn out brown horses, since they automatically give the create a stronger agouti gene, but they have as much chance of randomly generating a brown allele as another HH, so they still might be a carrier. :) The only herd helpers besides other bay-based ones that won't have a chance of generating the allele are black-based ones, since they block out any dominant agouti genes at all.

June, here's a het Brown hh:

Sorry to say, I gelded that hom At colt as a show horse. He'd been offered for sale twice with no takers and he's much too big for my breeding herd. :(

@Snapdragon
Thanks.
It's fine! I definitely understsnd. I just recently decided to try something with brown, so it's fine.Love,

I also search the auctions for foundation mares. Usually I just search for Expros that meet my color specs, but I also search for PFs and TNPs every once in a while. I find neat surprises pretty regularly and it saves me the create spree. This coming auction should be pretty full of gems as people sort through their mares and foals and I wouldn't be surprised if you found some good quality brown mares in there!ID# 43830

If you are thinking of doing something with brown, getting a Hom Brown stallion and then seeding his mates with brown and black mares can get you to your goal more quickly. Black mares will pick up his brown allele and throw het brown foals. Since brown is incompletely dominant, het brown looks totally different from Hom brown.

The "brown gene" (At) can be on any horse you create, unless the HH has homozygous bay (AA) or homozygous wild bay (A+A+). The ones we have that guarantee At is hom brown, het brown, TBBA and Yule Log, like mentioned above.
But any BAY HH does NOT increase the chance of brown. Bay herd helpers give at least A- for agouti. You could get lucky and get AAt, but those have the same chance as any other create, and the horse will always be bay, not brown.Thanked by 1RoseFlute -

I have gotten brown horses from 'Bay' hh. It was explained to me that those hh were written before At was introduced into the game and had not yet been updated. The same has happened with Amber vs Sable Champagne.
But you're quite correct that you'll have much better luck using the Brown-specific helpers.
@SpryOfJune, could you use ponies in your project? -
Must have been a fluke. I just did a search on both here and on HJ1 for brown or sable horses with a tattoo containing "bay", and got none that did not either have another tattoo containing the word bay, or had been GMTd.
Edit: did another search for deceased horses with the same criteria, and still got nothing. Would think it would be possible to find some if it was possible? -
Thanks everyobe!
@Snapdragon
Actually, I can. I'm looking for ponies anyways .
@Maribo
I think they're saying the horses come out with brown genes, but aren't actually colored brown. Like, they don't test as brown, but some of their genes are brown genes.Love,

“Must have” At, “tattoo” bay

Not too many, so your chances aren’t super great. Plus having that extra bay gene on top of the brown hides it anyways, and will be harder to breed out of your herd. I’d definitely go for at least one hom brown hh as your foundation stud so the 2G foals are guaranteed to get it. You can always use het brown or black mares with that, like Cheers says.ISO any and all Silver Pocket Watches!
God grant me the hbs to buy the ponies I need,
The fortitude to resist the shiny ones I truly don't,
And the wisdom to know there will always be more next time. -
@Lallyhop
Thanks.
I'm thinking of Maybe using the brown appy HH, or going a higher gen colored brown.Love,
Spry
