What makes a horse blue?
What does silver do to blue horses?

My new foals confused me, just when I thought I was getting the hang of breeding, and I can't find the answers in the FAQ or Genetics Guide, but I may be looking in the wrong place.

“Blue” comes when you have a black based horse (eE, Ee, or EE) and a KitR gene (the roan gene). On a black base, this makes a horse a blue roan. Silver only affects black based horses, and since your little lady is zZ for the silver gene, she becomes a silver blue roan. The Smokey part of her color name comes into play by the Ccr gene she carries.Thanked by 1BoogPastures

Yes, exactly. It’s not quite brown, but definitely not black.Thanked by 1BoogPastures

Okay, thanks! So blue is black and roan. Silver turns the mane and tail lighter, and turns black brownish? And since blue is black and roan, silver turns blue a brownish tinge, too?

And if you're playing with any of the Nexus family--Nexus, Blue Axiom, and Wrong Warp, a really blue horse can show up if it's homozygous for any of them. But that's a completely different fantasy thing. :) Blue roans happen in real life.

This link may help you out. It’s a lot of information to wade through, but I’m working on going through the color possibilities gene by gene.
