Christmas Contest! Prizes Announced! (Every Entry Won!)
  • The day has come! I've moved into my new dorm room, and my time spent in my barns has to be much smaller than it has been other years. Almost all of my breeding stock is taken care of, thanks to all of you, but I have a few specials left over on two accounts, many show ponies, and some straws.

    Everyone will get something!

    Here's how it works.

Each month will have a new theme, and each month gives you another chance to post. The whole contest ends around Christmas, but because I ought to give away the star of the collection soon, part A ends September 15, 3 weeks from now.

    September is Word.
    October is Music.
    November is Food.
    December is Story.

Each month's entry will be a recommendation of your favourite from each genre, be it podcast, audiobook, album, band, soundtrack, goulache, hors d'oeuvres, pizza buns, the time your uncle got bucked off a pig, or the time you nearly fell off a bridge but didn't.

    Prizes Include:

7 Candy Ponies! Each one will yield a Gene Modification Token which can be used to alter a gene on any unbred horse.
Assorted mostly unbred, GMTable special-create mares!
A once-ever-released Exceptionally Producing rank special Hidden Gates stallion, with one copy of satin, Sooty+, and White 3! All genes are open to members who have never bought them before. The RS comes with pearl, Sabino 1, DP, is homozygous for Appaloosa, and is B papered.

Themed Entry: So many favorites! I have to say one of my all time favorite books, however, is Gone with the Wind. I also love all the Sherlock Holmes, Tolkien/Rowling (love me some good fantasy), everything by Mark Twain, and for a more modern option the book that most recently snagged my fancy is Incarceron, a fascinating story about a living prison.
ISO any and all Silver Pocket Watches!

God grant me the hbs to buy the ponies I need,
The fortitude to resist the shiny ones I truly don't,
And the wisdom to know there will always be more next time.

Okay lol, in sorry. Its been a long day, and I TOLD you something that happened rather than saying a book you should read. Anyway, there is one book that im absoloutley in love with, and id love for you to check it out. Have you ever heard of the brothers Grimm? Well, this book kind of plays off of the same ideals. (Creepy twists, odd themes that you rarely see anyone write about) its a different take on the classic Peter Pan, where he finds children (who maybe reflect his own insecurities and faults) and takes them away. It does have some vulgar language and VERY dark parts, but honestly its amazing. It had me on the edge of my seat for so long; I remember downloading it on my phone and listening to it in class while I was working :) ill post a link.. Hold on.

Themed Entry: I'm a massive bookworm so favorite book is SO difficult, but I definitely have to recommend The Hate U Give. It's a book I wasn't sure I'd enjoy because the topic seems so political (the story centers on a black girl who survived seeing a childhood friend shot by a police and the aftermath thereof) but I thought it was so well done, managing to touch on all the issues without being too slanted to any one side (which is a pet peeve of mine). And even if you wanted to ignore all the political/social parts of it, it's still just a well written and interesting story! I'm definitely someone who doesn't mind thinking while I read but really needs a good story and good characters in order to give a dang about the book, and this one definitely fulfills.

Themed Entry: How to do this, I have so many favorites. One of my all time favorites is "She Said Yes" about a student who died at Columbine High School and it talks about her life before the incident. I am also a die-hard Harry Potter fan and am looking into rereading them hopefully next year. My favorite adult series are Dan Brown's Robert Langdon books I love how he uses bits of real history to create these fantastic mystery stories. There are so many more though I like a book that has more than 100 pages to it lol.

I love books of all genres but one I would highly recommend people, especially fantasy lovers, is the entire collection of R.A Salvatore's, additional authors: Tim Seeley, Andrew Dabb, books surrounding the character Drizzt Do'Urden. The stories are written in true form from the action, places and the characters themselves. When reading its easy to get swept into their world and "see" the events unfolding. You also get to "know" the characters as you move through adventure, heartache, friendship, betrayal, and more. Drizzt, the outcast dark elf, is a character a lot of us can relate to on some level especially during the more trying times in our lives and has often helped me see the lessons needed to move through such times. If life seems to be pressing down on you or you just want to escape to a magical world for awhile please think of giving these books a glance. Title list In chronological order:The Dark Elf Trilogy (Homeland, Exile, Sojourn) :The Icewind Dale Trilogy (The Crystal Shard, Streams of Silver, The Halfling's Gem)
:Dark Mirror, a short story in the Realms of Valor anthology. :The Legacy of the Drow series (The Legacy, Starless Night, Siege of Darkness, Passage to Dawn) :The Paths of Darkness series (The Silent Blade, The Spine of the World, Servant of the Shard*, Sea of Swords) :The Hunter's Blade trilogy (The Thousand Orcs, The Lone Drow, The Two Swords)
:The Transitions trilogy (The Orc King, The Pirate King, The Ghost King) :The Neverwinter series (Gauntlgrym, Neverwinter, Charon's Claw, The Last Threshold) :The Sundering (The Companions, Book 1)
The Companions Codex series (Night of the Hunter, Rise of the King, Vengeance of the Iron Dwarf).
    :Homecoming (Archmage, Maestro, Hero). :Timeless.

Themed entry: Hmm...favorite book recommendations...wow, this is harder than I thought it would be. Well, if you like fantasy, like me, I recommend anything by Tamora Pierce. If you like mythology, anything by Rick Riordan. Classic, I suggest Chronicles of Narnia. Christian, I'd have to go with anything by Frank E Peretti.

If you want non-fiction, it gets trickier because I don't know what you like. If you enjoy learning about Native Americans, though, I would suggest The Seven Visions of Bull Lodge and Plenty Coup: Chief of the Crows.

I read a lot so narrowing it down is difficult.
Sarah J. Maas is my current favorite Author. Her Throne of Glass series is my all time favorite I’m waiting for the last book to be published. I haven’t lost interest and I’ve been waiting for this book for quite awhile. She has great character development, and her writing grows every book. Her Court of Thorns and Roses book is good, but is more of a love story (I prefer action with a little romance) She also writes two books a year. One for each series.
Kristen Britain’s Green Rider series is great. They’re thick books, I find them refreshing since they’re about a female character, who actually seems human with insecurities, character faults, and problems. They also are fairly accurate on horse related things.

Bill Dorrance: True Horsemanship Through Feel. By far it’s one of the hardest horse training book I’ve ever tried reading (I’m still not through it all) but every minute has been worth it. I know everybody has their own way of doing things with horses, but this one is my favorite, and has helped me the most. I also thought I’d spice it up and add something that is different.

Themed Entry: I love reading books, there is so much more to them than a movie. I mostly read action, sci-fi, and fantasy. I'm with everyone elso, it's so hard to pick a favorite, so Ill go with two.
First, Patricia Briggs. All of her books I've read multiple times though the Alpha and Omega novels are at the top of the list.
Second, John Flannagan with his Apprentice Ranger series (I'd consider the Brotherband Chronicles as part as it is in the same world)

Prize preference- They're all too awesome to choose, so I'll let you make that decision.

I love reading. Anything, everything. Fantasy type stuff has to be my favorite. Anything I can find a different world and learn all about it in is just the best, especially when that book is huge. The dragonriders of pern series by Anne McCaffrey comes to mind as some of my favorites. It covers all things listed above lol. Tad Williams trilogy The Dragonbone Chair, The Stone Of Farewell, and To Green Angel Tower combines to make one seriously epic tale. He's also got new books out about the world he created, Osten Ard, but I haven't gotten the chance to read them yet. For, they were page turners, and I was hooked in quickly.
If you like westerns, you can't go wrong with Larry McMurtrys Lonesome Dove series. They too are epic stories and tons better than the movies, although I do love the movies!
Margaret Mitchells Gone With The Wind will always be on my list to reread. The movie leaves out crucial parts that make the book so much more. I never get tired of reading any of the books above.

There are so many good books there is no way I could recommend only one.
Firstly I’m not sure what genres you like so I’ll name a couple of great books from different ones.
1.) If you like Mythlogy I would definitely recommend The Odyssey written by Homer, I’d say it’s one of the best books ever written
2.) If you’re a fan of Fiction there are a lot of great books but a good one is The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway and can teach a lot.
3.) if adventure is your thing I’d definitely say the hunger games series or the divergent series, those are probably my favorite of all!

It’s really hard to choose just one. I am a huge fan of horror books and sci fi/fantasy. I love Stephen king books and anything by nick cutter. I recently read relic by Douglas Preston which was way better than the movie. The omega days series by John Campbell is fantastic if you like zombies. I also like historical fiction like the twelve mile straight by Eleanor Henderson and necessary lies by Diane chamberlain.

I'm really a sucker for romance novels. I'd have to recommend anything by Nicholas Sparks. He's the author of The Notebook (hands down my favorite), Message In A Bottle, A Walk To Remember, Dear John, and less well-known titles like See Me, The Guardian, and The Longest Ride...it's a long list but they're all wonderful! Most recently, he wrote something a bit out of his wheelhouse that I did not enjoy as much, but all the older ones are wonderful. He has another new novel coming out this October that I'm excited to read.

I could recommend dozens of books here, one for every genre I could think of, but I'll restrain myself to just five.
    1) If you like post-apocalyptic stories, especially from the POV of a sheltered academic learning how to survive, and/or love wolves, I'd have to recommend 'Wolf And Iron' by Gordon R Dickson. It's a bit obscure, not many people have heard of it, but as someone who loves post-apocalyptic stories and shared 19 years of my life with a wolf hybrid, I loved it. The wolf is spot-on and one of the main characters in the novel, and every aspect was just as well-researched as he was. I love this book enough I own it in hardcover, paperback, and ebook.
    2) For something fun and funny that you can pick up practically anywhere, I'd suggest the Stephanie Plum novels, starting with 'One For The Money', which was also made into a pretty decent movie. The books are much more fun than the movie, but the mental cast the movie gives you for the books is pretty good. Ranger is my favorite. Every girl bounty hunter needs a far smarter guru guy to sit back and laugh at her in between pulling her out of scrapes and cleaning up her messes, many of which she got into while trying to be more like him.
    3) If epic high fantasy is your thing, I have yet to read a series to equal Robert Jordan's 'Wheel Of Time'. I read the first book as a teenager shortly after it came out and I've reread it probably once a year since then without ever getting tired of the characters or their story. I don't often reread the whole series simply because it's so long, but if you like fantasy and haven't read them all, you truly should. It was Jordan's masterwork and put him - in my opinion at least - right up there with Tolkien.
    4) If you like sci-fi, I'd recommend the 'Troy Rising' series by John Ringo. I love his characters and his dry wit, and his world building is epic. He can take a what if and make you believe it could happen just that way. Ringo has several other series out there as well, all awesome with Ringo's trademark style and rich, believable characters, but 'Troy Rising' is my favorite.
    5) If you'd prefer modern-day magical/supernatural fantasy, I'd recommend Kim Harrison's 'Hollows' novels. They're fast-paced and fun, often funny, and she can tell a story that makes you wish the book was a little longer when you reach the end. Her characters are unique and believable, something I find sorely lacking in many stories in the genre, and I enjoyed the storytelling more than that of most of the similar stuff out there.

Themed Entry: The Old Kingdom series (all of it!) by Garth Nix. It's split between fantasy and alternate history 1910s england, with all the clashes between magic and technology, plus necromancers defying the natural order by reanimating things better left dead, and the abhorsens who use their bells to restore the natural order (and make sure dead things stay dead)

Second book recommendation; The Rise and Fall of D.O.D.O, by Neal Stephenson and Nicole Galland. Time travel, plus what to do when you get there!

oh, and my horse themed book recommendation: Horses In The Glen, by Gillian Baxter. It's an older book, but it has a soft spot in my heart <3 <br />
Fun fact; I love the abhorsen/old kingdom series so much I named my ragdoll kitten after the protaganist of the second book - Lirael.

My favorite book is The Jungle Book, by Kipling. Everyone has seen the movies, but have you read the book? The tone is a bit different - more complex. Mowgli gets lesson after lesson in the virtues personal responsibility, friendship, loyalty, and the pitfalls of greed, sloth, and bad leadership. It's a great book for kids, as it gives them engaging stories and character building examples.
I had read the book several times as a kid, so I was the only 8 year old in the theater complaining that they "got the story wrong" when the original Disney film came out. Most notably, Kaa the Snake was very wise, and saved Mowgli from the Bandar Log. There is a "second Jungle Book" too - with more Mowgli stories - some of the best ones.
Kipling also put in several nice little poems, Their lines come back to me often. Here is one of my favorites:

    Kaa's Hunting

His spots are the joy of the Leopard: his horns are the Buffalo’s pride.
Be clean, for the strength of the hunter is known by the gloss of his hide.
    If ye find that the bullock can toss you, or the heavy-browed Sambhur can gore;
Ye need not stop work to inform us: we knew it ten seasons before.
Oppress not the cubs of the stranger, but hail them as Sister and Brother,
For though they are little and fubsy, it may be the Bear is their mother.
    ‘There is none like to me !’ says the Cub in the pride of his earliest kill;
But the jungle is large and the Cub he is small. Let him think and be still.

When you ask me to pick a favorite book, you ask me a difficult question. I love reading and books period. In fact, I am a huge nerd and love to read more than watch TV or videos. It doesn't matter if it's poetry, comic books, novellas, novels, good fanfiction, etc.

I'll read it. I can't name an overall favorite book, but my favorite three literary genres are science fiction, fantasy, and supernatural. I even read below my reading levels (a writer must be exposed to all levels of literature) as well as the classics. I recommend books authored by Tess Gerritsen, R.L Stine, Caroline B. Cooney, Agatha Christie, Charles Dickens, Barbara Kingsolver, and Anne Rice.

The books I'd recommend reading are as follows:

    Wuthering Heights
    Poisonwood Bible
    Frankenstein
    Dracula
    Thirteen Reasons Why
    Speak
    The Fault in Our Stars
The Lovely Bones (The beginning is a little harrowing)
    Black Beauty

    Comic Books/ Superhero lit:

    Batman: Knightfall series
    The Killing Joke

    The Farseer Trilogy
    The Liveship Traders Trilogy
    The Tany Man Trilogy
Excellent books (fantasy) to lose yourself in!

Lakota Love Song by Madeline Baker. Its a romance book. Super great book title.

Before I read this book, I had a colt that I named Skylights Lakota Warrior. I bred him to one mare and gelded him. Then I read the book Lakota Love Song and thought what a great name!

The foal was born the following year and it was a filly which I named Skylight's Lakota Love Song. She had her first colt this year and his name is Skylight's Song of the Lakota lol. Okay a bit off topic.

I've read all of the Madeline Baker books that my library has and enjoyed them all. All of the ones that I read had Native Americans in them. :D

I will second SGT Reckless as it is a fascinating book. My only complaint is that you only feel like you're there in small snippets. Other recommendations in the equine biography genre are: Man 'O War: A Legend Like Lightning and Ruffian: Burning From The Start. I actually cried my way through the last quarter of Ruffian.

If adult - let's call it romance - is up your alley, then Hardwired is a pretty good series. Similar in general nature to Fifty Shades but IMO better written with better characters.

Other good ones I've read are: Divergent, Uglies by Scott Westerfield (even though I've never actually finished the series), anything by Philippa Gregory.

I want to mention one of the podcasts I very, very much enjoy. I mostly listen while doing housework and driving, because I'm busy with my hands and can't be reading a book! :)

Scooby Dos and Scooby Don'ts. I love Scooby Doo, I was raised with heavy influence of the gang. It's been very entertaining to listen to a couple of folks go through nearly every piece of Scooby media since the very first show was created. They go into great detail about episode specifics, character dynamics, development and relationships. At the end of each episode, they determine if what they watched is a "scooby do" or a "scooby don't". It's been quite a trip down memory lane, with an interesting perspective!

Themed Entry: Ooh boy.... how to narrow down the list! I'm a sucker for medical type books. Atul Gawande is a personal favorite of mine. His book Being Mortal really made me think about aging and death, and why the systems we currently have in place are so broken. His books Complications and Better are really good too, surgeon stories with lessons sprinkled throughout. I love Henry Marsh's Do No Harm as well. He's a British neurosurgeon not far from retirement, and he's seen a lot. His sense of humor is phenomenal and he gives you his weathered view on the field: he's tired, but he has dedicated his whole life to brain surgery and it is very clearly his passion. You also can't go wrong with the classic dystopian novels, Animal Farm, Fahrenheit 451, and 1984 (listed in order of my personal preference). Black Stallion series is classic horsey fiction but I remember really enjoying them, especially the ones about his foals and the different things they did.

Thanks for the awesome giveaway! Enjoy all the new reading/listening material.

It's been a long time since I've read much. The book I read most recently was The Half-Drowned King by Linnea Hartsuyker. I picked it up because I wanted to read something about Norway, and after I got into it I was really surprised - I thought I recognized some of the names of the characters, and I realized it was because I had seen them in my family's geneology research. I'm supposedly related to both Ragnvald and Harald. I think it's a pretty good book though, even if you're not a descendent of the characters.
I also loved Divergent. Well, I mean, as much as it's possible with that ending. But I really got swept up in it more than I usually am in books.

Themed Entry: I'm going to throwback to two of my favorite child/teen authors who, even as an adult, I like to pick up their books because they are like candy to me, quick, sweet, and easy to read. First is Brian Jacques who's Redwall series never disappointed. I loved traveling to Redwall Abbey, Mossflower woods, and meeting all the characters. His books moved about in the history of Redwall, going forward and backward in time, and even going to the Badger Lords and their history. I was very sad when he passed away in 2011 and that there would be no more of his charming Redwall books to read.

My other favorite teen author is Tamora Peirce. My favorite, and I think the first, book I picked up from her was the Wild Magic series and the main character, a heroine, could speak to animals and her pony, Cloud, was also prominent in the story. It was set in a fantasy/medieval time with castles, knights, and dragons. What I love the best about her books is that each story loops or relates to the others and characters from the books show up in the other books as well (in some way or another). The main characters are also strong female heroines and I think that's great for girls, or women, of any age to see.

    “Word” Themed recommendations:
Patrick Rothfuss’ series “The Kingkiller Chronicle”. One of my favourite authors, relatively new, the Kingkiller Chronicle is a trilogy with the third book still being written. If you like fantasy and amazing storytelling you will love this series.

Anything by Neil Gaiman. “The Sandman” graphic novels, “Ocean at the End of the Lane”, “American Gods”, “Anansi Boys”, “Stardust”... you can’t go wrong with any of his works.

Bernard Cornwell’s “Warlord Chronicals” a wonderful, stark, dark, more historically accurate interpretation of the Arthurian Legends.

Conn Iggulden’s “Conqueror” series which is a well-researched historical fiction about Genghis Khan during the time of the Mongol Conquest.

Nonfiction/semi-autobiographical: All of the books by Linda Kohanov. Start with “The Tao of Equus” and then try “My Horses, My Healers” by Shelley Rosenberg. I have had the joy to have been able to live and work with these two phenomenal women and my time with them was some of the richest and most amazing moments of my life working not only with horses but people as well.

I mostly read so don’t listen to any podcasts or audiobooks. The only radio show I follow is American Country Countdown, I tune in every week but realise it’s probably not for everyone!

It’s difficult to narrow down just one favourite book. I’m a Harry Potter tragic so that will always be right up there but I’m sure you’re already aware of it lol.

More recently, I’ve recommended a couple of books to people and they’ve also enjoyed them. ‘Uprooted’ by Naomi Novik is a cute little love story with magic at the forefront and I can’t wait to reread it. The other one is ‘Strange the Dreamer’ by Laini Taylor which felt like a hidden gem while I was reading it, and didn’t want it to end. The good news is, the sequel comes out later this year!

If I think of any more I shall add them to this post. Thanks for offering such great prizes for giveaway :)

Where do I start! I love podcasts, they are always playing in my car on my commute and when working on paperwork at work. Some of my favorites include: Ghosts In the Burbs, Deadly Manners, The Black Tapes, Major League Eventing, Heels Down Happy Hour, and The Blood Drawn Chronicles. I have many audiobooks that I listen to as well, starting with Harry Potter, the Percy Jackson series, I have started the Game of Thrones books. I like to go to the library and rent the audiobooks and import the cds into my iTunes. I am also in the process of replacing most of my actual book with the kindle versions where possible in an attempt to declutter. I have set a priority on my favorites: the Black Stallion Series, the Shannara series by Terry Brooks, Gone with the Wind and Scarlett, the Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit, and The Kingdoms trilogy by Angus Wells

  • I missed the entry but I'd love to put a recommendation in.

  • Oh I loved that book too RubyJo. I read so so many many books it's hard pick a favourite!

My most recent re-reads of favourites though include
Dragon Prince/Dragon Star trilogies by Melanie Rawn (love these books)
Black Jewels Trilogy (and sequels) by Anne Bishop (awesome books as are many of her other series)
Pillars Of the Earth by Ken Follett (bit of an epic, and now two sequels but an awesome read)
Maia by Richard Adams (who also wrote Watership Down, Plague Dogs and other fantastic books)

A very old favourite I recently re-read though is called Wind In Cario by Judith Tarr, I read this book as a kid and still go back and read it again every few years.
An arrogant prince commits a crime against a magicians daughter and is turned into chestnut arabian stallion who ends up in the stables of this fathers enemies. There the daughter and heir names him Khamsin and sets out to tame and train him.
I love the book because the character of the stallion with all his snorts and wildfire is very well written by someone who knows horses

P.S I really enjoyed reading people's book preferences, there is certainly some there I'm going to look up!

  • The winners have been randomly number generated and--
you all made great entries! A lot reminded me of old favourites, like Redwall, Mark Twain, Tamora Pierce (though I stopped reading since I was pretty young and the romances and nudity {even in text, yes I know} made me uncomfortable, although I did appreciate the female leads), Rick Riordan, John Flannagan, Louis L'Amour, et cetera...I actually listened to the Jungle Book on cassette waaaayy back in the day (which for me is early 2000's), when Blackstone Audiobooks was still publishing. I come back to books like Harry Potter and works from Terry Pratchett more often these days. :P I read Strange the Dreamer over Christmas break this year and Whew! That was wonderful. I love new fantastical worlds, don't you?

    Anyway! The Winners -

Sunlit, CeffylDwr, RunFarAway have won candy ponies, lostcause is the winner of the Hidden Gates mare, and KINTARA won Atlantis! :D B-)
Congratulations to all, and thank you for entering. Every entry also wins a show pony! If you'd rather win something else, PM me and we can work something out. :)

The entries that won this round will be discounted in the next rolling, but the same players can win if their future entries are rolled. Don't forget that Christmas festivities will mean more RSs, and they'll likely be added to the prize list. The theme of Word continues until the end of September, when Music takes over!
