Q & A: Snowflake or not
-
How do you know that they carry snowflake?
-
Snowflake only shows if its homozygous and if the horse is expressing appaloosa (the Lp gene).
It shows as defined flecks of white that get larger as they age and varnish out
@AHayesHorses can better explain than I I'm sure.Thanked by 1AHayesHorses -
I know, but the thing is, how do you know they carry it? You haven't tested them, and they don't visibly //show\\ it. (They obviously could be het, but there really isn't any way for you to know until theyre breeding age)
-
I don't doubt that they ARE carriers, its just impossible to tell unless they are (3) or are expressing the gene
-
Why do you feel as though they aren't expressing the gene?
-
Well I mean, usually with snowflakes (when homozygous, like you said) they have little white flakes like this girl.
3G Snow Day NFS
When heterozygous, the only way to tell if they carry the gene (they never express it when homozygous)expresseither breed them to a homo/hetero partner, or look back in their lines to see if any of their ancestors are carriers.
In this case, yours are foundation stallions, so you can look back at their parents; the only way to tell would be to breed them to another snowflake mare.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but they both do express the double Llp gene, so that rules out them being homozygous. (They don't have flecks)
I'm not trying to be rude at all, so I'm sorry if I came off as such. I just thought id let ya know before you went on with the auction :) -
No definitely, this is all a learning experience. Um, but are the white spots I'm seeing not flecks? I mean, granted there isn't as many as on the horse you posted but there are some.
-
Nope! I can't for the life of me remember what its called, but its normal on appys :) hold on. I'm gonna go and try to find out what its called
-
Here, this might help you. I had the same exact questions some other players answered them for me :)

I never even thought about the snowflake breeders club!
-
Yup! Sorry that I kinda took your post over haha. xP
-
No worries, I've already changed the name and everything lol
-
I replied to your message! But for those interested, here's what i said:Snowflake doesn't show up in heterozygous form. Only in homozygous. Since these girls are foundations, and snowflake is randomly createable (although very very rare), there is a ever so slim chance that one of them might possibly be heterozygous but the only way to tell for sure would be if they produced a homozygous snowflake foal when bred to a snowflake stallion. The chances of them being snowflake carriers though is extremely slim. (Like, 1 in 1000 or maybe more).
-
Oh and what you see (the little white spots on the two mares) is the varnishing of the appaloosa.

Thanks guys!
