Culling by height...
-
I am thinking of just breeding for the smallest ponies I can. I am wondering if anyone culls because of height? I know if I do this then I will lose a bunch of my horses and good breeding stock. I am wanting to even make my nexus horses go pony size not sure how to do that because I started with drafts. If anyone has suggestions on how to get there please let me know.
Most of my horses are 14.2 or lower. I am thinking of only keeping my 14.0 hand horses and lower in tact. Am I being to strict? -
If what you want is small ponies, that's the way to go. It will take longer to get the draft lines to that size, but it's certainly possible. Just breed the shortest to the shortest and pick a maximum height for each generation, depending on where you started.
Once you get a good set of intact ponies that are 13.1, then reduce your maximum height to 13.2, and so on, gradually shrinking the maximum height as you get closer to the goal. I believe the smallest you can go in the game is 12.0.De gustibus non disputandum. "There's no arguing about tastes."

Thanks Sandy. I would like to see one of my lines to be strictly 12.0 horses mostly. I dont know why I love the ponies but I do.
-
You need a small stud and they will get there. Good luck :)
-
I have a second gen cob (Het) nexus stallion that I could sell some straws from. :) I could also sell some foals to help you out
-
I'm working on a line of tiny chestnut ponies. If you'd like any straws just let me know :) Working my way down to 12.0 hands!

Thanks everyone. Yes I will certainly be looking. My smallest studs are 13.1 hands and my smallest mare pony is 12.3 hands. Now I need to do a lot of reorganizing to get them where I need them.

@MariaChapinFarm3 can you link me your cob boy so I can see him please?
-
-
how much do you want for him?
-
Im not selling ((him)), sorry. (He is the startup of my nexus line) I could sell some foals or straws, though.
-
Gotcha...Could I get 5 straws from him tomorrow?
-
-
yes colour i would be. I cant pick up til tomorrow though.
-
Have a nyce day!
-
Maybe you would like some straws from this tiny guy, 12hh. His sire is under 13hh if youd prefer 2g straws :)

Sent you 5 - let me know if you need any more in the future!
-
He's not as short as you're wanting (he's 13.2), but his bone weight is really light at 0.75. I could offer straws from him, if you'd like.
Beware: extensive white factor.

I have an alt account (LallyMinis) where I’m trying to breed cobs down to straight 12 hh. I’ve not been breeding even to make it easier for me find stock, so I’ve been culling based on height and pasture space. As I get shorter and shorter, my cutoff height becomes lower and lower. I’m currently sitting at a cutoff of 13.2, with next gen dropping to 13.1 (and a couple slightly taller mares because they’ve been throwing tiny foals).
One thing to keep in mind is culling by AFH instead of AFPT - average foal height. I look at the foals thrown by the mares out of the same stud and average out the heights, so I have a particular mare that’s a solid 14 hh (normally an insta-cull) that I’m keeping because all of her babies from this stud have been 12.3 or shorter.ISO any and all Silver Pocket Watches!
God grant me the hbs to buy the ponies I need,
The fortitude to resist the shiny ones I truly don't,
And the wisdom to know there will always be more next time.Thanked by 1FeldingFields -
Finally. I have 112 mares that range in height from 12.3 to 13.3 hands. Gotta get another barn for my 14.0 to 14.2 hand girls. I feel better knowing who to use. Now got to make a decision do I alter my other horses.
-
I may have some more ponies I would be willing to sell. Would you be interested?
-
I breed ponies and cobs, shorter the better! I don't so much cull on height, but I often gmt stallions to be the smallest they can be to help getting smaller foals!
I can get the height down from drafts and warmbloods very quickly with gmt as long as one parent is small
You are welcome to breed to any of these ones
