  • So... I changed my naming system for my horses which means all my intact horses need to have their names fixed. Y'all... including foals, thats 2538 horses... Lordy I'm gonna need another cappuccino O-O But i must power through and get it done for the greater good :'( Just gotta finish my Great Mare Massacre of 2018 and then onto pastures and then the dreaded names... Wish me luck. I'm gonna need all of it.

  • ^^This does not include foundations though
  • You are a goddess!

I wish you the best of luck!

Help me build my black brindle army!
Always looking to buy foundation brindle drafts in black, blue roan, grullo, classic champagne, etc.

I work a 7day on 7day off schedule and my activity here will reflect that.
I can be very scatterbrained and forgetful so if I don't get back to you in a decent amount of time just poke me.

  • Best of luck. How do you all do the abbreviations? How do you come up with them?
    Thanked by 1AHayesHorses
  • Woo. I did mine this spring, "spring cleaning" if you will.

It was tedious. And brutal. But I'm much happier with the abbreviations!

  • @bestfriend this is what i am changing mine to. I have been using single letter abbreviations like this for a while but i changed what some of them mean so gotta redo them all.

Uppercase is for hom and lower case is for het. Except in the case of brindle in which it's always uppercase.

    Aa - Nacre
    B - Brindle
    Cc - Chinchilla
    Dd - DP
    Ee - Splash 3
    Ff - Frame
    Gg - GP
    Hh -
Ii - Ice (followed by number)
    Jj -
    Kk - KP
    Ll - Plaid
    Mm - Splash M
    Nn - Snowflake
    Oo -
    Pp - Pearl
    Qq - Satin
    Rr - Watercolor
    Ss - Sooty+
    Tt - Thunderstruck
    Uu - Mushroom
    Vv - Nexus
    Ww - Wrong Warp
    Xx - Axiom
    Yy -
    Zz -

Numbers 1-4, and 10 without and "i" in front, refer to white spotting genes

  • Do you mind if I use yours? I like it better than what I have been doing?

  • If Ammit comes out with many more genes, I’m going to run out of letters to use to signify them!

  • @AHayesHorses Thank you! I thought I was just not getting the geek speak as it were with the codes some use on here... It never dawned on me people might be labeling with their own unique codes! lol I feel better now.

I just label mine with the gen and major genetic codes if I label at all, but I'm boring like that. :D

  • This makes me glad I only breed grullos and only track 4 patterns (KP/ Nexus on HJ1, Ice / Satin HJ2) and the gender in the name.

    Naming still sucks lol
    Thanked by 1AHayesHorses
  • I only use:-
W (any white I think should not be bred with any other white - so white spotting and some extensive whites get this code)
FR - Frame (again to avoid mishaps!)
sa - satin - so they get put in the satin pasture

Of course I name my gens and BS for bootstrap herd

I also have a small pasture for actual breeding so I can have multiple gens in my big pastures and move them over to breed in batches to the right stallion, so I do need some labeling - in theory I could hand pasture breed every mare. I don't do that btw! But I must admit though my breeding takes ages! :D

Good luck with the renaming :)

  • I only label potentially lethal alleles, pearl and DP.. Makes it pretty simple for me.
    Thanked by 1AHayesHorses
  • You guys are crazy :P I just use M1 (brown/wild bay), M2 (DP), M3 (satin) and M4 (snowflake), oh and KP and GP of course, but I put them up in front. Those are just so I can search for each line + the generation I need.

I always use the search and a notepad (on my laptop) to do breedings, so I don't need abbreviations. Thank goodness, cuz with all these amazing genes Ammit is throwing at us, I would be changing things up every other month.

  • Speaking solely for myself, I have always relied on tattoos for identifying the presence of certain genes, especially if they can be hard to see (e.g. frame) or need to be homozygous to affect the phenotype. I also use tattoos to identify generations in HaJ1, up through gen 5.

Here in HaJ2, I use a numeral following the name to mark generations for intact horses.

In this way, I avoid having to keep a catalog for the meanings of informational codes included in the names of my horses. I'm a fairly casual player, and try to keep things easy for my aging brain to remember. :D

  • Lol, y’all are crazy! I just keep track of gen and line and that’s more than enough for me :))

S for SNF line, K for KP line, G for GP line, W for wtrc line, T for thunderstruck, nothing for my bootstraps, and then a couple side projects that have their own abbreviations. Number for the gen. I only have a couple cross-line horses like my 2SK (2nd gen, hom snf and hom kp) and that’s more than enough extra stuff in the name for me, lol. Then again, I do like my long horsey names, so I often end up using up the character limit anyways =))

  • What I like about my (admittedly extensive and unwieldy) code is that I can look at horse names in the barn or on chat pages and know exactly what color and pattern and special genes it is/has. That said, since my girls live in pasture from the time they hit 3 years old, I really don’t have to do this anymore. I may stop coding my girls so extensively in the future, but I’m not sold on the idea yet.
    Thanked by 1AHayesHorses
  • Yeah I dont have time for all that :))

    My abbreviations are

    KP
    DP
    GP
    SnFl - Snowflake
    WW - Wrong Warp
    WC - Watercolor
    aX - Axiom
    nx - Nexus
    McH - Macchiato / Splash m
    sa - Satin
stypls - sooty + but I dont always use it.
    i - Ice 1
    i2 - Ice 2
    i5 - Ice 5
    i8 - Ice 8
    i9 - Ice 9
    i10 - Ice 10
    i13 - Ice 13
    i14 - Ice 14
UN - for uneven horses that I dont alter.

Lined brindles will have brindle in their name or brndl

Sometimes I add a few other abbreviations if I feel the need to. But mine are pretty self explanatory. Although after seeing / buying Cheers' horses over the last few years I can almost completely read her code lol
    Thanked by 1AHayesHorses
  • One of the things that I love about codes is that a lot of codes are similar for similar things. So, for instance, KP in a horse name almost always means it has KP. So I can search for KP in a horse name in a general search, for instance recently when someone said she was going to put up all of her unbred mares for brood, and find their KP Horses within a group quickly and easily without having to dig through pages and pages. Similarly, X almost always means a Nexus/Axiom Horse, or sometimes W20... X is helpful because you can’t just search for “Axiom”, you have to search for each of the 3 colors individually. I think Abbey Road used J as her thing for GP and that’s where I picked that up...but I may be making that up!

Anyway, I do like that some things like that seem to be fairly wide spread.

Like Sandy, I also like to use a million tattoos but then you have to search for the tattoos to move stuff around from barns to pastures. Using my naming code, I can do those moves in groups directly from the barn and that’s simpler to me. That said, I absolutely use my tattoos for searching groups of horses and particularly for horses that are Het for hidden genes like KP and GP, or DP in non-red based horses.
  • Most of the reason I do my code is for hidden genes (and then the closed/fantasy genes because I want to make sure to keep them separate from my regular herd) because they’re not genetically searchable. Things like satin I figure I can always toss into the search bar and/or view the genetic code of the horse. Not that I don’t see how it’d be quicker to have everything in the name, but more that I don’t mind the step of opening a horse’s page to confirm something but having to dig into their parents/foals feels like too much :))
