What genes to do avoid in your breeding programs?
-
I hope this isn't too negative, but I have been wondering. What genes seem to be least popular - and why?
Personally, I don't care for splash and KitW20. The reason is I like a lot of color on a horse - I want to see those deep bays, blacks, or duns. Splash, especially enhanced by W20, just makes a lot of mostly white horses.
I will use them sparingly, but if I am culling foals, those two genes are often big factors in my decision.
How about you? -
I don't really have a specific gene I don't breed for. I like all genes. I also have RL APHA horses. I don't really like a lot of white in RL because it js hard to keep clean but here it doesnt matter. I do try to keep frame off my boys.
-
There are none that I actively avoid, although I try not to keep much satin or gray. I'm just not fond of the hom satin look, and the gray covers my pretty colors. I have most white patterns, although I try to breed for smaller markings so I can see the colors. I ended up with a bunch of satins in my bootstrap herd that i'm not thrilled with, but i'll just breed it out.#28036Thanked by 1supersarah

I try to avoid gray and frame. I like the look of frame, but I don’t want to risk the lethality...Watercolor, Chinchilla, Axiom, Nexus, Wrong Warp, Nacre, Ice 5/8, Satin and PearlThanked by 1supersarah

The only horses that I keep some genes out of are my stallions. I try to limit them to genes that are not lethal with any other genes, so Olw, W1, W2, etc are removed. That way my mares can be every colour of the rainbow, and any gene combinations. If they get any of the genes from their Mom, I will GMT them off. If I do end up with a colt that I just have to keep, I make sure they go to very plain mares.Thanked by 1supersarah

I dislike w1 and w2 but love all the other w's.
I don't like Rabicano or pangare either. Don't know why they bother me.
Oddly enough I don't mind frame except that the patterns it generates don't have as much variations as I'd like to see (alot of repeats).
I also don't like fruity colors which is great because I am not tempted to spend dollars on many closed genes.
Yet, I love hom satin.
I guess I'm a fickle little crab lol!BREEDING DARKNESS (ok black liver but it sounds cooler)
And Silver Blue Pearls
Focusing on Sooty Plus, Sb2, W3 and W10 -
w20 - makes all my pretty horses white :D
Also my herd is supposed to be sooty brown and black with/without some white, so I avoid regular bay (A) and S (non-sooty). My problem is I love grullo, wild bay, buckskins etc etc... So I will never manage to just have brown/black - LOL!
Oh and I love frame :X -
I tend to avoid w1, sb1, and sort of appy. Some appys I love, some I really don't, so it's not something I actively breed for though I do have quite a bit of it in my herd. Sb1 is another hard one, because I really love minimal markings of it, but I hate it when it covers a horse.ID: 16853Thanked by 1supersarah

I'm not a big fan of w20, frame, and greys personally. I do have SOME but I'm very careful about breeding them lolThanked by 1supersarah

I really dislike champagne so try not to keep any horses with that unlesss they are super special.
I also try to avoid w1 and W2 but but that’s only a dealbreaker when I’m being really strict.
I try to keep lethal genes off my stallions. If the stallion is everything else I want I may let it slide but generally only mares with lethal genes stay intact.Breeding liver chestnut drafts that carry snowflake and kp.
Also breeder of mushroom, watercolour, chinchilla, splash m, wrong warp and thunderstruck.
Horses generally always available.
PM me for any enquiries.Thanked by 1supersarah -
Black, champagne and grey as I breed liver chestnut or chocolate palomino horses hopefully with kp and lots of different white patterns, w20 is starting to bug me though. For the most part I try to avoid frame in a stallion as that limits his mares.21170 ~ Breeder of quality Liver Chestnut and Chocolate Palomino riding horses and ponies with unique twists. Specializing in Kit Promoter with fancy white patterns.
Coming soon ~ Snowflake, Nexus and Ice5Thanked by 1supersarah -
I breed chestnut horses but within that I tend to avoid the light chestnuts and love liver, but I do have non-sooty chestnut breeders.
But I breed all genes within a red based horse. My guys/girls just don't have E - even my show ponies are red based :)Thanked by 1supersarah -
I avoid tobiano, dun and w2. I like w2 very much but decided it was easier to have just w1 which I prefer, less lethal mistakes.ID #21047

I try to avoid champagne on all my accounts (on both servers) since I don't like it much, I keep frame to a minimum just because of the risk, I also seem to have very little pangare but not because of trying to keep it outThanked by 1supersarah

I don't really have a hard and fast rule that a specific gene is never allowed in my lines, but I do have some that I keep out of certain lines.
I avoid frame and other risky white genes (1 & 2) in my stallions.
I avoid gray in all my lines except my axiom.
I don't much care for regular splash, roan, or w8 but I do have it.
I'm thinking about banishing w20 because it messes with my sabino and other white patterns that I would like to SEE on my horses. -
I love frame I breed for it in both genders, I’m not a big fan of ful colours, they have to have something on their coat or carry frame.。・:*:・゚★,。・:*:・゚☆ ID #: 47760 。・:*:・゚★,。・:*:・゚☆

I have a few different color lines that each have their own requirements, but as an overall whole I dislike grey (covers everything else) and tend to avoid roan/rabicano as I prefer the “shiny” look. I also like at least a little color in most of my horses, so I tend to avoid extensive white factor. I do like frame/w/w2, but only in my mares so I don’t have to worry about potential lethalities.ISO any and all Silver Pocket Watches!
God grant me the hbs to buy the ponies I need,
The fortitude to resist the shiny ones I truly don't,
And the wisdom to know there will always be more next time.Thanked by 1supersarah -
It depends on what line for me. I keep all dilution genes (silver, pearl, cream, and dun) as well as roan out of my Sable Chinchilla Ice 9 Line. But then I also have lines that revolves around Pearl and Silver/Roan etc. I try to keep frame out of my heavy white spotted lines and Splash lines (although I am starting to like the looks of frame with Splash M) to reduce lethal foals. I really don't have any genes that i don't like or that I religiously try to stay away from. I just use different genes in different lines for different outcomes :)Thanked by 1supersarah

I try and avoid w1 and w2 just because they don't get along with anything else, even w20, which is pretty benign. I also don't care much for gold champagne, but I like the darker champagnes, so the golds get snipped.
-
I have 2 basic and 3 free accounts, and the only thing I noticed about all of them is no Tobi, no Rabi.45120

What I mostly try to avoid is horses without sooty. I will take SSty, but it has to be one special pony to stay on if it's SS. I am also wary of appaloosa (especially with PATN) in most lines, and W1 and W2. I rarely like roan or pangare in my brown/wild bay lines (but looove pangare in my livers :P ). I am also not a huge fan of splash, but somehow it is EVERYWHERE in my barns. lol. It is literally the one breeders club I have most entries for every freakin year.
Oh, and frame. I loathe frame on my boys, and barely tolerate it on my girls. -
I breed grullos so avoid almost all other colours other than black (since it doesn’t stand out like a sore thumb in the pedigree.) from outside lines. Any I breed myself are snipped quickly.
As for patterns I pretty much only avoid roan and appy. Which makes finding outside blood difficult as it seems most people who breed Grullos have appy on them too. I have let a few spots in but usually only het so that hopefully the foal doesn’t inherit it and I can GMT it off. -
I don’t care for w1 or w2, except with the belly spot. I also tend to avoid satin, just out of preference.
I also don’t like most of the fantasy colors, except the more natural looking ones like Macchiato, Chinchilla, and some of the Ice genes.
