Color testing confusion
-
http://hj2.huntandjump.com/horse.php?horseid=170391
so i just Coggins tested this mare (color testing), by the way abbey thanks for letting me user her sire. She came up as a White Gold Champange Splash Frame varnish Appaloosa. but the problem is it wont let me register her in the Appaloosa breeders club, why? Also how did she get Varnish? neither of her parents have varnish. can someone explain this to me please?Life is Special live it to your fullest -
You can't register her in the app breeders club because she is already in 4 breeders clubs. If you take her out of one of the others, she should be able to enter the app club.
She got the varnish from her dam. (eE aa CcrC dd gg ff SS PP zz chch SaSa | KitKitto SpsSp VVrn LL rbrb OO IiIi WF: None PATN: None ) Varnish only effects the color and shows up in the color name when combined with appaloosa (Llp in the gene test), but any game horse can carry it (and many of them do).I was jllewis on the old forum.

how did she get varnish from her mother? Her mother is not an appaloosa. and nowhere in her family tree can i see a appy with varnishLife is Special live it to your fullest

Varnish is present in many non appaloosas in this game. It came from her dam's maternal grandparents. If you look at their gene tests, KJ Storm Clouds and 0 FR Deep Trouble are both homozygous for varnish, even though neither has appaloosa.I was jllewis on the old forum.

Just an FYI, Coggins testing isn't the same as color testing.
-
That is entirely wrong! The Coggins test checks for an incurable and sometimes fatal viral disease called Equine Infectious Anemia. Here is the Wikipedia entry on it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Equine_infectious_anemiaI was jllewis on the old forum.

Aha! That's what caused the confusion. Very understandable.
When horses are tested for Coggins, there is a description of each horse, including color and white markings, that goes into the paperwork, to prevent confusion over which horse has been tested. So the paper giving the results for the Coggins test included the horse's color, even though the test itself had nothing to do with determining it. In fact, the color naming on that paperwork was probably an informed guess based on his appearance. Most likely, he's never had a formal gene test in his life (most horses haven't), unless some previous owner sent in a sample and paid for it at a gene testing lab.De gustibus non disputandum. "There's no arguing about tastes."

In real life. I had to have my APHA horses Coggins tested, because I was going in and out of Oregon, and then when I moved them to California. I never had my gelding gene tested, just my filly to see if she carried the LW gene, because she is an Overo, and her sire carried it. My gelding had a tattoo though, and that was on his papers. The color on the Coggins was just an extra description of the horses I was taking out of state and bringing back.
