Show lines
  • Alright, so I'm pretty new here (joined in April, but haven't been too active as I've been busy with school/work/traveling). I've picked up on the fact that you want show horses to make your money. What the best way to obtain these horses? It seems to be the best route is to breed them yourself, so how do you start from there? Is it better to buy some good breeders, or is it possible to pick some pretty foundations and turn them into a show line? What should I be looking for in pairings and foals? Thanks for your help, I know this is a kinda big question.
  • The best thing is to scour the auctions. Find horses that are not too old (under 16ish) that have a lot of TOTAL points (on the horses main page...it says Total Points: XxXX. Over 500 is pretty good), for a decent price...I try to stay under 3000.

You can also do a search for horses for sale>under 16 years old>advanced sort = All time points, to find horses on the public sales boards.

Another method is to have someone with a whole bunch of extra show ponies give you one to help out! What is your stable ID and I will add you to my chat room so you can buy this guy for 1hb: http://hj2.huntandjump.com/horse.php?horseid=936952

  • Awesome, I'll do that!

Aw, thank you so much! I really appreciate it. My player ID is 46519.
  • If your account is still under 20,000 points you can also create horses with randomly assigned points.

On my secondary account I made a ton of money creating all the exceptional / good show horse Herd helpers I came across in my daily 5 free HH’s as yearlings.

I sorted all my horses by points and put the highest pointed horses in the barn farthest from my primary and worked back. Anything left in my primary barn I put up for sale or in the auction. I was looking for quick sale and high turnover more than big profit so added 500hbs per 100 points to the create price. Since I was selling them I was able to continue creating more pointed show horses longer and able to keep more of the higher pointed horses for myself. Also yearlings will stick around longer so give better profit return on the original points until it finds its legs and starts adding more points from showing

  • As for breeding them yourself (which is just 500 per foal but they take some time to start earning good), bootstrapping is great for that. Find yourself a high star stallion to buy, doesn’t matter what genes, just a random star for sale as cheap as you can get, and breed him to a bunch of foundation mares in pasture, and then just BA all the babies - they’ll all get snipped but should have some pretty nice show stats.

That is, of course, only one type of bootstrapping, just so I don’t confuse you - the other type is breeding, then BA on only the colts so they become show ponies, but keeping the untested fillies to breed back to their sire when they’re older (it gets you blue and gold mares pretty quick, and then show geldings too, though since you just need show ponies for now I’d suggest snipping everything until you feel a little more established - a 3:1 show horse to breeder ratio is good, more if you can do more).
ISO any and all Silver Pocket Watches!

God grant me the hbs to buy the ponies I need,
The fortitude to resist the shiny ones I truly don't,
And the wisdom to know there will always be more next time.
  • Awesome, thank you guys for the help. I assume for finding this male more recent eras are better?
  • Eras don't mean much as far as breeding goes, they are just for showing purposes so that members who have been around a long time and breeding a long time can compete on a level playing field with beginners. For a bootstrapping stud, *star papers are more important. If you are interested in bootstrapping, I would suggest joining the bootstrapping buddy chat. There are a ton of awesome people in there who can get you set up with a good stud!

  • Eras are only important for leaderboards. People with long established lines would dominate the leaderboards but dividing horses up into eras gives new players (or those who have refreshed their herd) an even chance at being competitive
  • Gotcha, thanks! I was under the impression that a newer era line of show horses would perform better and be more lucrative. I sent a request to the bootstrapping buddy chat!
