Ride a cock-horse...
-
...to Banbury Cross,
To see a fine lady upon a white horse;
Rings on her fingers and bells on her toes,
She shall have music wherever she goes.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Another one for you. :)
I want to see your cock-horse and your vision of the white horse that the lady rides.
Now for some trivia...
So, what is a cockhorse? Here is a basic definition from Wikipedia:
"A "cock horse" can mean a high-spirited horse, or an additional horse to assist pulling a cart or carriage up a hill. It can also mean an entire or uncastrated horse.
From the mid-sixteenth century it also meant a pretend hobby horse or something that a child could ride like an imaginary horse such as an adult's knee."
The lady has been associated with various historical women including Queen Elizabeth 1, Lady Godiva, and even celtic goddesses.
An alternative version to the rhyme is:
"Ride a cock-horse to Banbury Cross,
To buy little Johnny a galloping horse;
It trots behind and it ambles before,
And Johnny shall ride till he can ride no more."
I tried to pick my cock-horse based on what I would have loved as a child. Like most little girls I went through a white horse period but it was fairly brief. I fell in love with black horses early on and loved interesting flashy patterns. I feel that if the younger me had to choose her cockhorse from my barn here she would have chosen this handsome fella. He isn't black but he is close enough.
The lady's white horse is a bit harder for me because I envision a tall, dancing riding horse for the lady but I don't have one in my barn. So I chose this pretty girl instead.
So what do you think guys? Feel like indulging in some whimsy with me again?
Breeding for all version of black drafts. (Including black liver)
Help me build my black brindle army!
Always looking to buy foundation brindle drafts in black, blue roan, grullo, classic champagne, etc.
I work a 7day on 7day off schedule and my activity here will reflect that.
I can be very scatterbrained and forgetful so if I don't get back to you in a decent amount of time just poke me.Thanked by 1Lallyhop -
Like many lil girls I had a “black horse with white mane and tail” period, so perhaps this one:
2H Psychedelic Shrooms
Or perhaps, better color if we take the “high spirited” meaning, his dam:
Shroom Freak
Or, for a more recent love, one of the very first characters I made (to later be incorporated into the book I’m working on) was Ayleth, a somewhat stereotypical “assassin in the corner of the tavern” - but a she, of course, and she had a horse she loved, a bay stallion with a white streak in his tail that she’d tamed from some farmer’s field where he was running wild (every horse story ever, right?). Definitely “high-spirited”. I recently got lucky in finding a horse that just about perfectly matched him, thanks to a lovely display of GP. :x
Ayleth’s Fury
As for that white horse, well, I picture a fine lady needing a calmer, well-behaved sort, so perhaps this cute spayed mare.
God grant me the hbs to buy the ponies I need,
The fortitude to resist the shiny ones I truly don't,
And the wisdom to know there will always be more next time.Thanked by 1BlackWyld -
For the lady I envision my horse Lady of Bones but if I were the lady in question it would be my Dark Diablo all the way. Black horses have been my favorite since I can remember especially "Jet Black".
My lovely and lively prancing white horse. He barely fits my program, but I just had to have him.
Here's my childhood dream horse. I always loved black horses with minimal but striking markings on their face and hooves.
And here's a fine white horse for the fine lady, my hom pearl gray stallion who finally, this month, lost his pearliness and became totally white:
My first horse, who I owned at age 8, became my dream horse. She was a black tobiano Chincoteague pony. To this day, I think tobianos are one of the prettiest patterns
.
This guy is the closest I have to what my pony looked like.
I've also always loved rich red chestnuts, like this guy.
KA Insomniac
I don't have any horses that are "white" in the traditional sense, but I have this lovely perlino dun show mare...
Like most kids, I went through a black horse period (The Black Stallion, Black Beauty...how could we not?). But then I fell for buckskins for some reason, and still would love to own one today.
So probably one of these two for the cock horse:
Airlie Red Flesh U
For the white horse, I agree that I’m seeing an Arabian or Welsh pony sort of dish face with a kind eye, a horse that would be quick and sweet and take good care of it’s rider. I’d pick this girl from mine.
I think of a cock-horse as being a high spirited, fancy young stallion or riding mare, the very sort that would make everyone in the village in the olden day’s think of you as very fine for owning as you trotted past on a Sunday morning haha. If I had to pick such a horse from my own herd it would likely be this fellow. I always loved bay duns and he is a spirited 3 year old colt.
As for the ladies white horse I picture something calmer, reliable and safe to help her travel from town to town on. So I picked this lovely, sensible 13 year old mare:
