Color Name Liver - Question
-
So, I have a liver snowflake stallion that produced these two colts - both of whom, before I gene tested, I'd assume come back chestnut. However, they both came back as Liver Chestnut - which surprised me. Both have a potential for two copies of DP along with the single Sty each show. However, they just don't look liver to me.
Am I misjudging their coat color - does two DP/1 Sty liver look different than a 1 DP/ 2 sty? Or, does 'liver' indicate presence of any DP gene?
Thank you for any insight!

“Liver” means a chestnut with minimum of three darkening genes - which is either two sooty and one dp or one sooty and two dp. You can also have two sooty and two DP, which will test as “liver” but looks black, colloquially called a “black liver” though there’s no difference in actual color name.
The first has two sooty, so one dp. The second has one sooty, so two dp. Neither is a black liver.
As to your main question, they do look liver, but they do sorta look a little light - but part of that is the pangere lightening the legs and probably the snowflake tricking the eyes a bit, and part of that is that even within colors there can be a bit of variance. I suggest trying to reroll the portraits a couple times and see what you get if you want them to be a tiny bit darker. :)ISO any and all Silver Pocket Watches!
God grant me the hbs to buy the ponies I need,

Liver indicates at least 3 darkening genes period, whether 1sty/2dp or 2sty/1dp. Their sire, when paired with hom sooty mares, will always produce a foal with a copy of DP, since he is a black liver. Just looking at those two I would instantly say liver even before testing, they are too dark to be a hom sooty or het sooty, het DP chestnut.
The second stud you got lucky, since the dam was a DP carrier with no sooty. He got DP from both parents and the sooty from his sire. -
Odd! They both seemed too light to me to be liver - but I may just have missed it! Haha or losing my touch! Thank you for the extra set of eyes.

The pearl lightens the coat also .. Even het lightens it slightly :)Breeding liver chestnut drafts that carry snowflake and kp.
Also breeder of mushroom, watercolour, chinchilla, splash m, wrong warp and thunderstruck.
Horses generally always available.
PM me for any enquiries. -
Look liver to me (and very lovely btw) :X

They are both pP too. The light spots in places from that could be throwing you off a bit.

Both those boys are basic livers, top one is Hom pangare (PP) though.
Now, if your boys were 4x darkening they would look closer to this:
$G2 MidB BLiv
Yours are 3 dark currently. Their sire is 4 dark (black)
Looks like the first ones mom did not carry DP (or liver would be in her name since she’s double sty.)
The second one’s mom is a DP carrier, but she has no sty to pass down.

I'm told there is also a bronzing effect from appaloosa that may affect coat colourBreeding quality pintaloosa riding horses and ponies - and having fun with it!

They do look light, but yes I agree probably due to both the pangare and the Lp
