Okay, normally I'm okay at liver detection, but the newish Grey totally throws me off. And naturally, they don't enter in the liver club.

Here's another dark chestnut grey for comparison. I'm usually thrown off by these guys:

Well, that's what I used to think, but the second shade is way common in greys, now. :P
And if anyone wants a Hz grey Liver draft stud, he's up. I can't use him.

The first one is really dark as a grey chestnut with sooty. You know, I don't focus on grays when breeding horses, so I don't know all the shades, but the first stallion seems liver.

I breed greys.

I have a feeling it might be buggy... I had a girl who was very definitely a normal chestnut in her thumbnail (2 year old) and when she refreshed on opening her page her color was very much like this. I thought... LIVER?! but there's no way she can be.

Right?? But then, I did create this top chap in a run of around 30, and he's pretty unique in that bunch, so there's still a chance of DP. I guess we'll never know until grey gets changes, or we could try breeding him and see how the foals look. :P

From what I remember a long time ago in a chat about gray, it was said that the gray gene makes the original color of the horse seem darker. Something about the way gray works, it's like pushing out all the color faster, so it causes it to look darker, before it goes gray. It was quite a while ago though, so I could be remembering it wrong.

I took the gentleman home. I usually don't breed for gray, but with drafts I do.

Gray is just band aided in right now. Definitely has some issues.

I don't think this horse is liver.

ETA: I just checked him 100% not a liver.

@Corral that's what I've read, too, and that's why it's so hard to tell. Thanks for buying him! Do you want me to reimburse you a little? :/

Does anyone have a grey they know for certain is a liver? :)

I do. She is liver red roan underneath. I'll see if I can find that chestnut.

More pigment means they go dark faster and then lighter faster. I doubt you will be able to tell on random creates.

This boy is liver, by a Freaky Friday stud. Looks a fair bit darker and more reddish than yours
