How can we fix "Available To Adopt"
  • Can we get some more concrete handling with this program? I would hate to shut it down but I keep getting reports about sales rules being broken, people trying to sell without buddy list, people trying to use it to dump horses with no points etc. At this point it is causing new members to be frustrated. Like I said I don't want to shut it down but I better no program then one that is breaking sales rules and upsetting new members.

What is the current state of the program?
  • Well...I personally have put up horses for adoption both from my own show herd and a blue ton of horses with 3-600 points that got dumped at the auction. I only adopt them through my buddy list and have had no issues with that. I've also adopted out some Great Show Horse and Rank Special mares that were intact (but with more like 100 points) and a few lined intact fillies.

Obviously the highest point horses tend to be those that are easiest to adopt out. I'm trying to keep my herd reasonably young (no more than 12) but I'm finding managing that herd takes some time and that is taking away from my breeding and foal culling time a little...so I mostly only manage the herd during the break from the breeding season. (Though I'm happy to adopt year round). I know a lot of other players have put up extensive notes on most of their adoptable horses...unless mine are intact they just wear the Available to Adopt tattoo. Also, I am careful to remove the tattoo when they go on my buddy list, since I don't want someone to then try to adopt them from the new player I just helped out!

I have probably adopted out 30 or so horses...I was surprised there wasn't more demand, especially since I have such high point horses available...

Don't know if that is the sort of information you are looking for. If I can give you something more specific or relevant, please let me know!
  • I've only heard of a few people even requesting information about adoptable horses.

I had assumed that the people who would have extra horses available to adopt would be the older, usually upgraded members, so all sales could go through the buddy list. I think a reminder to people that the SELLER has to have buddy list to use it, but the BUYER does not, would be a good idea. I can put a note on the thread(s) about that part.

I think peoples good intentions have resulted in folks not really thinking about the end results. The whole point of the program was to get older members to mentor new folks. Maybe a prod to senior members to follow up on their adopted out horses would help (if they can remember which horses they are!), or at least to contact the player to whom the horse was sold.

I don't know how we could deal with the dumping horses with no points problem, I noticed that as well. I guess we could require a minimum of 200 points, and I could monitor the list of horses up for adoption, but I would have no way of enforcing it. I would be willing to PM the owners of those horses and ask nicely if they would reconsider.

One thing I have noticed is that the high pointed horses are a hot commidity
    in the public auction.

ETA - As well as limiting the horses in the program to those with 200+ points I would suggest allowing Perfect Foundations, Top Notch Producers, and only unbred intact mares, as well.

  • If someone wants to be the czar of adoptable I am more then happy to wave my wand and make them the official head of the adoptable program so they can set official rules. I think there is too many people with good intentions but not really knowing how to go about things.
  • The problem I had was probably my fault, from talking with a couple of others in PM. Here is what happened.

It was the new members first day, she PMed me she had just joined that day, and was interested in one of my Adoptable mares. When I tried to put the new member on Buddy List, for some reason, I couldn't find their stable. I didn't know why. I probably did something wrong when I tried to add them. But, since, we were both on line, I just put the mare up with a note on the horse's page, (which I have since learned is against the rules.) I PM'ed the new member I had done that. I saw the horse was picked up, and I did not check to see who bought the mare. That was my second mistake, I just thought since we were both online, that the new member had picked the mare up. Then a day or two later the new member who wanted her, PM'ed me again. And asked, why I was asking so much more for the mare, than the agreed upon price. I PM'ed with some others more familiar with the program. That is when I found out the mare had been sold three times in one day, with an increase in price.

That being said, I am going to work with the new member to get her another horse from me. And, I am not going to be participating in the program anymore. I really love this game, and don't want to disappoint or frustrate new members. I want to help them. I will sell directly through Buddy List to new members, and continue doing raffles for new barns and such instead.
  • Ammit, I assume that waving your wand will involve allowing that person to 'remind' other members of the rules, with an evenutal report to you if there is a problem?

Or were you thinking about maintaining and managing the Adoptable herd?
    image
  • Also, may I ask, is HJ1 having the same problems?
    image
  • I know that I have had 2 horses on buddy for adoption for quite a while, because the person I put them up for has not picked them up. I sent them a pm, with the links to the horses, but I don't know if they knew to check their pm mail, or that they never came back.
  • Exactly that on the wand waving CF. Could be maintaining a herd as well. HJ1 is having some issues but its a bit more overhere. I don't mind helping create an account for that managed herd either. I don't have time to organize something but I can help out with set up costs.
  • What do you think, everyone? I will volunteer to manage it, if you guys all feel like this is a program you want to continue, and to succeed.

  • If you want to take it on that would be awesome. I'm still happy to help mentor new players, but I feel like we do a pretty good job of that on the general forums anyway...plus it's good to get multiple perspectives!
  • I think that's an excellent plan.
  • It would be good to have maybe 2 or 3 people in charge so if one is busy it's not a big deal.
  • sounds like a good idea to have someone in charge of the herd, Iam available to help out when needed since I am in Australia I am on in a different time frame which maybe helpful
  • Ya I think one central "official" herd is the best way to go about it. That way buddy list sale is always on option, and you know every horse in there is worth it and not a dump horse.
  • I am happy to help if I can, though my time here has been a little limited of late.
  • I have been a sort of semi-coordinator of the program on HaJ 1. Some players have entrusted me with their adoptable horses, and I have those in a barn set to show, so they get shown on a regular basis twice a week, and can increase their points while waiting. Other players prefer to handle their own adoptable horses, but I believe that most of them have posted in the original thread, so all or most of the horses up for adoption can be located in one place.

There haven't been a lot of requests, but I believe that all the transfers I have handled have gone smoothly. I generally pass on all transfer information via private message and use buddy sale exclusively for any horse sales I do, whether it's an adoptable horse or a regular sale.

  • Most of the issues I have seen have been from smaller stables with out premium upgrades. The heart is in the right place put a horse for sale for 500 hbs will be scooped up and put in the auction period. You can't just list it and expect it to be there 4 hours later.
  • So, where do we start with a Donation Stable? Ammit, could this double for a holding barn around Christmas for Secret Santa? or like for Rose and Cheers who can't sell each other horses due to associated accounts? or would you rather keep it for just the one purpose?
    image
  • I think it should just be for one purpose. Easier to manage that way. There are plenty of people willing to act as go between for rose and cheers and the like. The secret santa elves seem to work well for the transfer of horses for secret Santa
so I think it only needs to be for the one purpose
  • @PaintsStables - were you trying to add her by the name or by her account number? It only works via account number. :)
  • @PaintsStables To add it was clear your heart was in the right place but there was an overall breakdown in communication about HOW this should work.

Christmas is 6 months away let's not worry about it right now. ❤

As far as where to start you gals figure out what 3 people you want to have access to the account and I will sort it from there. My strong preference for for accounts that have been here longer and who have large show barns themselves.
  • @Triple, I may have tried by name and not her ID number. I am not sure now.

@Ammit, thanks, I am going to give her another horse, that is close to the same as the other one. I think I am just going to offer to new members from my Buddy List, until the Adoption Barn gets set up and working better.
  • About the issue of searching for members, the member search is set up for searching by stable name, which is good, because I mostly use it to find out the stable ID number of other players. However, I have noticed that it doesn't work for very new members, perhaps because their names aren't recognized by that particular portion of the game program yet. Ammit probably can clarify that for us.

  • It works for every member ever. It doesn't even know if a member is new or not.
  • Thanks for that information, Ammit. I guess there must be another reason why I have had difficulty searching using the name of new members.

  • Try searching for part of the name. The forum name is not always exactly the same as the game name.
