Anyone live in OKC, Dallas, or NOLA?
-
My family embarked on what to us is an epic road trip. We have done Birmingham, Oxford, Memphis, and Little Rock. We are in Oklahoma City for a few days to recharge. Does anyone have a recommendation for things to do? We try to avoid tourist type places, and are looking for what the locals do if that makes sense. Bonus if it horsey enough for two people, but sufficiently non-horsey that the other two people can bear it. We will be returning home through Dallas, and then either Houston or Shreveport and the New Orleans, and then home, so suggestions for those cities are appreciated. Anyone else roadtrippin this summer?

Personally, I would say NOLA is very tourist-y. But it may be a personal opinion. I used to live in Louisiana, and visited NOLA very often, and about all you see is tourists, and depending on the part you're in, you could see very...barely dressed people. =))Love,

If you ever head to ky I can pretty much tell you every place to visit depending on your interests. :)

@SpryOfJune we intend on avoiding the party sections =))
@Amour33 the next road trip will be through KY preferably during Rolex. My husband can visit distilleries while I soak up horsey goodness -
I used to live in OKC... there is a white water rafting park down town not far from the zooWatercolor, Chinchilla, Axiom, Nexus, Wrong Warp, Nacre, Ice 5/8, Satin and Pearl

lol horses and bourbon is two of our top attractions but if you like the outdoors you'll need more than a couple of days...caves, hiking, the moonbow if you are here during a full moon, oh and if you get close to Ft. Knox go into Brandenburg for Jailhouse pizza! If your husband likes trains the railway museum is great. Just a lot of things most people never think of when coming here. Hope you have a great trip I wish I could tell you more about NOLA but I only head that way to hog hunt I get enough tourist parties to dodge during Derby time here.

NOLA native here! There are a lot of touristy things about New Orleans, but there's also a very genuine heart to the city. And, recommendations depend highly on what your interests are - history, architecture, cuisine, music, nature, literature, etc.
Depending on how long you're there, getting out to Jean Lafitte park to see the swamps is a good option - and it's only about an hour outside of the city. Going up to the Garden District to look at the architecture. The cemeteries are always worth seeing. Likewise, taking the ferry across the river from the French Quarter to Algiers Point is fun. It's the second oldest neighborhood in the city, after the French Quarter, so lots of neat architecture and the old courthouse. Just strolling down the riverwalk and listening to the buskers is a good way to go. The aquarium and insectarium are both fun to visit, especially if there are youngsters in the group.
As far as food...goodness, there are so many options. A muffalata from Central Grocery. Beignets in the French Quarter. It doesn't hurt to go to the Drive Thru Daiquris, just to say you've been. Domilise's for poboys. Hansen's Sno-Bliz for a cool treat. It's late for crawfish, but there may still be some around.
