Naming lines? Where did you get ideas?
-
I am going through and wanting to name 2 main lines. I am drawing blanks. I am not very creative and was wondering where you all draw your inspiration from?
Another question is how many breeding stock mares to a stud is reasonable? -
I usually make while listening to the tv and any words/names/themes that stick out get put as a name. Or I’ve used episode titles for names. If the parents have names I’ll often mix them together or have them relate to the topics
I hate naming lol I always get stuck if I try to start a line theme -
As for how many mates / stud I usually have 10-50/ stud although I have more studs than I use in a year. Sometimes they get rotated out using the same group of mares other times the studs get overlooked continuously

I have three main lines I breed. They are also my oldest lines I have. They are called Prodigious, Inferno, and Shrapnel.
Prodigious is my Draft DP line. I started it right after the drafts first came out. I looked in the thesaurus under big. The foundation stallion for that line I named Going Prodigious.
Inferno is my Bay GP line. I started it as a way to bring back a childhood friend. I had a horse named Copper as a kid who was a bay. His coat looked like a brand new shiny penny and he had a black mane and tail. He reminded me of fire which is how I got the name for the line.
Shrapnel is my Snowflake line. Looking at the gene it reminded me of bird shot so I started thinking about tattoos along those lines and came up with a grenade hence the name Shrapnel.
As far as building my foundation herd I normally start with one stallion who is normally a RS or one from Foundation Rescue and match him up with up to 30 mares that I normally pick up from Foundation Rescue or are RS mares themselves. As I move through my generations I try to have 2-3 stallions and 30 mares. -
My primary account uses (mostly) names, words, and phrases associated with stars. I started out with celestial stars (think Milly Way, Eclipse) but realized I’d run out. So now it includes actors, musicians, movie and song titles and quotes. Some references are more subtle, for example “Kitten Whiskers” which pulls from The Sound of Music. Or “Treehorn,” based on a quote from the movie The Big Lebowski. My second account uses Disney characters, actors (including voice actors), titles, songs, etc. some are inside jokes/comments based on my own Disney trips.
Decision making is not my strong point.
For the next 72 hours I’ll be focusing on _____ (insert breeding goal here). -
I'm a bit of a pain with naming lines as I don't really have set lines, just a big mix of horses. But my foundie stallions generally get names related to their genes like Vanilla Macchiato for my Macchiato line and Cosmic Dust for my Axiom line.
Then foals just get a two name combo of their parents name so I can tell what genes they're likely to have at a glance. I usually get way too many pasture foals to create names for them individually.
Foundation mares get any name under the sun, I think I have one called Driving Test :)) -
I am suddenly slightly embarrassed that I call my lines literally what they are: Black Draft, Silver, Nacre, etc.
Of course, I am the girl who gave her childhood bear the unique name of "Teddy", so perhaps no one should be surprised. :D
(First generation horses I name after song lyrics, lines from plays, or what I see out of my window. Then I try to make clever combos in the later generations.)Thanked by 1levesel2 -
So far I've only got two names that are lined and tattooed (though others are in the works). I pulled from favorite movies/tv shows for these particular ones. DP Aztec Gold is in reference to Pirates of the Carribean and a nod at my Macchiato herd sire named RS Jack Sparrow. The White Walker line is referencing Game of Thrones and the herd sire The Ice King, these are all my Ice10 kids but would also include any other ice genes if/when I get them. Other lines will eventually be named as well but for now, those are it.
Aztec Gold line is really a catch-all for any horse that carries DP, be it het or hom (showing or not) but they do have to either prove or it has to be obvious they are carries before they get the tattoo.

I have named a champagne line Toast of the Town in HaJ1 and Cup O Kindness here, a gray line Misty Meadows, a bay dun line Dunedin Bay. Each of those references the color for the line in some way.
On HaJ1, my Chinchilla line is called Bad Gerbil's Mushroom Patch because another player offered a small prize for lines named with badger puns, which caused me to name the foundation stallion Bad Gerbil.De gustibus non disputandum. "There's no arguing about tastes."

also playing H&J1 as SandyCreek Acres: ID# 137592 -
The one line I'm working on right now is Specktrical which came from a Netflix original movie I was watching at the time and to keep it in regulations I played around with the spelling in a google search bar until it said "did you mean?" and still sound like the same word. For the tattoo I played around with a photo editors stickers over a white back ground until I came up with a smiling skull and crossbones over glowing green and white with a black fade in from all sides plus I added the word love in the lower right bone end for my name inspiration (Amore/Love) which was also spelling altered. Don't over think it inspiration hits when you least expect it and don't try for it.

Song names are a good way to go. Then you can name future foals with songs from the same artist.
I have a Lord of the Rings line who I name from an online Tolkien elvish dictionary.
One of my watercolor stallions is Monets Garden so his foals get a lot of flower names or names of his paintings.
Mostly what I’m looking for, particularly for my stallions but also for my mares, is a two word name that will give me lots of options.
One of my old boys is State of Origin. It’s a rugby league competition here in Australia but those two words, State and Origin, you can do so much with! State as state like California or Queensland, State as emotional atmosphere, Origin as beginning, Origin as where something came from, Origin as an anatomical term....
I do a lot of naming sitting in front of the tv and using words I hear, or with my music playlist open and naming from song titles or lyrics, or sitting in front of the bookshelf and using book or chapter titles.
I’ve also had Harry Potter themed show herds—character names and chapter titles.
Really, anything you’re into outside of the game can give you ways to name! You just need something with a wide enough sweep that you can get lots of names. Video games, music, movies and books are easiest I think, but there are lots of options.
My Mushroom line is going to be named for mathematicians, physicists and equations that use mu in them (the Greek alphabet character). -
I have loved your names Cheers. You will be pleased to know that this guy is still alive:

"Bad Gerbil" is genius.
