Show horses
-
I just placed several hundred spayed/gelded 1-5 year old horses in the auction. I have decided that, with the reduced amount of money an HJ2 horse earns in it's lifetime that it's just not economical to fill my barn with non-breedable horses. A breeding mare can earn me much more over her lifetime with show points and foals combined than a dedicated show horse can.
-
Tough to resist putting them in pastures, though.
-
Yeh that's the problem I have, my breeding mares no longer earn me money as they are sitting in pastures
-
They go in pastures for roughly the first 3 breeding seasons. After that I have usually moved on in my breeding so they become babymakers for profit. I can rotate 500 head in and out of a single 100 horse pasture and earn 750,000 a month. That's 187,500 a week, roughly. Not including what they earn me from points. They only need to be in the pastures for a day to make profit babies, the rest of the time they are off showing and earning points. Significantly more money than what 500 geldings/spays will earn me.
If I use a generic foundation stud on all my lined mares I have nice, unwanted babies who will likely all get yummed, even if I don't take the time to spay/geld them.
And that's not including my nice mares who can go up for higher brood fees. I'm confident intact horses will make me more money than spays/geldings. -
It never occurred to me to rotate mares out of pastures and make a bunch of babies for profit and then pull them out to show. Duh.

Never occurred to me either LOL! Easy way to make money and you don't need so much barn space hmm...
