Fifty Shades of Buckskin *an unintentional breeding goal*
-
After getting three very lovely buckskin foals in a row while breeding some of my mares today I decided to go through my barns and see just how many buckskin horses I had managed to breed. I was completely surprised to discover that with the three I bred today I have amassed just over 50 buckskins! It occured to me that I had, unintentionally, become a buckskin breeder hahaha.
I breed for Sooty, DP, W10, Pearl, Snowflake and height in my drafts, I also have a KP draft line and a very small satin WB line on the side with a small smattering of KitM scattered throughout. I have never intentionally bred for buckskin coloured horses but it seems I have the right ingredients to keep producing them without ever truly noticing I was doing it until now. Has anyone else ‘accidentally’ bred for a certain trait or colour without really trying?
Just for fun I’ve linked a handful of my buckskin horses below, they have managed to make themselves known in every single one of my breeding projects. Every horse below is a tested buckskin and yet the variety in colour and shade is quite astounding. I’d love to see anyone elses unintentional breeding projects too!
Here is a sample of my buckskin band:

Very pretty! I breed for sooty, brown based buckskin so quite a few of your examples show up in my herd. I love buckskin and the great variety it produces.Thanked by 1SilverAleki

Neat! Thanks for sharing! Regarding your little snowflake draft with the unique shade, I got a cherry drop buckskin that is really similar and I remember thinking I had never seen one that color until seeing yours just now!BREEDING DARKNESS (ok black liver but it sounds cooler)

I really like the last one on your list @pfrsue the white blanket on the rump is adorable haha!
@duelinghawks it’s such an odd shade! It reminds me a bit of milk chocolate in colour
Thank you everyone for your lovely comments I love hearing about what other people breed for and seeing all the different shades in a colour :D -
I too am an inadvertent buckskin breeder with 172 of them in my herd (just under 15%). About 100 of them are buckskin Duns!Thanked by 1SilverAleki

It's not just me, then‽
I don't breed for color. I look at color only to minimize any chance of lethal combinations. On rare occasions, if I'm choosing a pairing and all else is equal, I might consider color, but it's very rare.
It took a few seasons to realize that the game decided I breed for dun. Tobiano dun in particular, and short-ish tobiano dun.
Personally I would rather have taller horses overall, but 12+ PT is more important than 16+ height, so short pinto duns it is!
This lad is actually a nice height, but otherwise typical of the direction the game has chosen for my herd.
